    Assassination of Franz Ferdinad
    The Balkan states of Bosnia and Herzegovina, had been annexed from Turkey and taken into the Austro-Hungarian Empire. This was strongly resented by many Serbs and Croats and a nationalist group, so they formed a group, "The Black Hand". Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria,decided to inspect Austro-Hungarian troops in Bosnia.So The Balck Hand sent an armed group of students to attempt an assasination. A Serbian student, Gavrilo Princip, had successfully assassinated the Archduke on June 28, 1914.

Russia was allied with Serbia, and Germany did not believe that she would mobilise and offered to support Austria if needed. The on going battle was a major defeat for the Russians. Thousands of russian men died and 125,000 were taken prisoner.
