    Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife were assassinated while visiting Sara, Bosnia. He was next in line for the Austro- Hungarian throne. The killings set off decades old tensions in Europe and started WWI.

    Woodrow Wilson became the first Democratic president since Andrew Jackson to be elected to two consecutive terms of office when he defeated Supreme Court Justice Charles Evans Hughes in the 1916 Presidential Election. Hughes, the Republican candidate, was defeated by nearly 600,000 votes in the popular vote.

    On Nov. 7, 1917, Russia’s Bolshevik Revolution took place as forces led by Vladimir Ilyich Lenin overthrew the provisional government of Alexander Kerensky. The provisional government came to power after the February Revolution resulted in the Russian monarchy being overthrown.
