The Triple Alliance is formed between the countries Austria-Hungary, Germany and Italy.

The Triple Entente is formed between the countries of Russia, Britian and France.

During the period of four years, numerous events took place to try to break the stalemate. All of these followed the same pattern of using explosives or heavy gun attacks to force soliders underground and therefor give the opposing side time to run across 'No Mans Land'.

On a visit of goodwill to the city of Sarajevo, a Serbian nationalist assasinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife. This angered Austria-Hungary.

In the month of July 1914 (after the death of the Archduke), Austria-Hungary threatened and argued with Serbia. Due to the assasination of the Archduke being conducted by a Serbian, Serbia was immediately blamed. Austria- Hungary made a set of ten harsh demands for Serbia to complete in order for Austria-Hungary to not declare war.

Due to the demands being so harsh, Serbia decided to only complete nine of them which therefore kept them as an independent country.

Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia as they only met nine of the ten demands set.

Due to also being a Slavic nation, Russia agrees to assist Serbia in the war against The Triple Alliance.

Germany demands that Russia stops preparing for war. When there is no response from Russia, Germany decides to declare war.

As members of the Triple Entente Britian also joins the war to support it's ally countries France and Russia.

A military strategist Alfred Von Schlieffen devises a plan to defeat France before Russia was ready to go to war. This plan however relied on very controversial assumptions.

Due to the resistance of Germany, France and Britian were unable to move them any further away. This therefore left them stuck fighting a pointless battle.

The Gallipoli Campaign was made to force the Turkish out of the war so that trade and weapon routes could be devised. Gallipoli appeared to fail at the beginning, however as times went on Turkish soliders and ANZACS began respecting eachother, making the war a more fair and honourable enviroment.

As a new method of death and destruction in the war, Germany decides to introduce highly poisonous gas to the war.

Italy uses a clause to remain neutral in the war, and then swaps from the Triple Alliance to the the Triple Entente.

In early 1915, Australia and New Zealand decided to join troops and therfore become ANZAC (Australia and New Zealand Army Corps)

The Battle of Fromelles was held in France. It involved Australians making a plan to attack the German trenches in order to remove attention from other battles. This failed miserably and many lives were lost.

The Battle of the Somme was one of most horrific attempts to break the stalemate. The Allied forces attempted to push the Germans back around ninteen kilometres. They succeded, but they only pushed them back half of the way. Just that small gain came at an incredibly large price to both sides. Just in the first day of the battle, are estimated to be above 19000, over 1.5 million shells where used in the first week of the attack. Continued next event***

attack. By the end of then battle, The Allies reported over 620,000 deaths and injuries and the Germans counted 500,000. Australia fought in Prozieres from July to August 1916. The battle was fierce and cosstly to the lives of the soliders.

Although at the beginning of the war the USA is neutral, after German submarines sunk American boats and killed hundreds of innocent people, the USA joined the war.

In 1918, Russia decided to focus on its new communist enviroment. It signed a peace treaty with Germany and was officialy removed from war.

Battle of Amiens was the final offensive battle in the war. The Allies gained seven miles very quickly which then forced Germans to retreat.

Germany signed a ceasefire for 11am on the 11/11 1918 to end world one. The treaty contained many controversial aspectes, however it did end the 'war to end all wars'.

In 1925, The Geneva Protocol treaty was created to stop chemical and biological weapons causing mass destruction in the war.
