A German man by the name of Johannes Gutenberf created the printing press. His first publication was a 1,282 page Bible. Soon after, printers appeared in other cities, with this, books could now be made quickly and inexpensively. The explosion of printed material quickly spread Renaissance ideas.

In 1453, the Ottomans led a major land and sea assult against Constantinople. After about two months Constantinople finally falls. The Byzantine Epmire is no more.

King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella agreed to pay for the voyage of the Italian sailor Christopher Colombus. He believed that he sould sail west around the world from Spain and siccessfully reach China. He didn't know what lied beyond. He returned from his trip in March of 1493 with many exotic items.

The land where Christopher Colombus landed was not India but a completely new continent. Years after his voyage a man by the name of Amerigo Vespucci traveled to the new lands. The new lands were named after him. "Americas" is the latin version of Amerigo but "feminized" and turned into "America"

Inspired by Dias's success, Vasco da Gama set out for India in 1497. The trip took about ten months but he finally reached Calicut, India. After he returned, the Portugese sent more ships out to India.

Polish astronomer, Nicolalus Copernicus discovers that the earth revolves around the sun. He didn't publish his most famout book "On the Revolutions of the Heavenly Spheres" until the last year of his life. He knew that the church would oppose his work because his work contradicted the teachings of the church.

Famous artist, Michelangelo Buonarroti paints the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. HIs masterpiece depicts senes from the Old Tesament of the Bible.

Martin Luther nailed his 95 thesis, or complaints, on the door of the church. His complaints were about things like, how selling indulgences is silful. He also criticized the power of the pope and the wealth of the church.

He left Europe with five ships and about 250 men. The trip was very difficult, some men rebelled against him. He was killed in a fight against the native people. Only 18 of the origional crew made it back to Spain

Ten years after the conquest of the Aztecs, a comquistador named Francisco PIzarro led an expedition to Peru. He had heard of the fabulous wealth of Peru's Inca Empire and hoped that he would win some of that wealth for himself. Pizarro went to their new emperor, Atahualpa and demanded that he accept Christianity and hand over his empire. The emperor refused and the Spaniards took him as a prisioner. The Spaniards killed the emperor and headed to Cuzco, to desdroy it and take over the empire.

King Henry VII created the Anglican church just so he could divorce his first wife. He had parliment pass laws to end the reign of the pope in Europe. After he died and Mary came to power, she breifly turned England catholic again, then Elizabeth I returned England to Anglican.
