  • Proclamation of Neutrality

    Washington proclaimed a position of neutrality in order to keep the United States from getting in the middle of the conflict between the two warring nations France and Britian.
  • XYZ Affair

    In an effort to defuse tensions between the United States and France, Adams sent two American diplomats to meet with French officials but the French foreign minister sent three agents (designated “X,” “Y,” and “Z” by Americans) to demand a payment of money from the Americans before French officials would agree to meet with them.
  • Convention of 1800

    Agreement signed that peace was restored between the two nations france and the United States.
  • Louisiana Purchase

    President Jefferson purchased the Louisiana Territory from Napoleon of France, doubling the size of the United States.
  • The Embargo Act

    The act stopped trade between the United States and two warring nations: France and Great Britain. Unfortunately, the Embargo Act was a bad for the American economy. By halting our trade with other nations created an economic hardship for the United States.
  • War of 1812

    The British had taken on the nasty habit of taking American sailors off of their ships and forcing them into British Navy service which lead to many Americans being upset and eventually to many battles fought between the two.
  • Treaty of Ghent

    The treaty that ended the war without presenting any gains for either side. It returned to each side the territory it had possessed before the beginning of the war and said nothing about impressments.
  • Monroe Doctrine

    The doctorine stated that the United States would not tolerate European intervention in the affairs of any independent nation in the Americas. Also the Americas were no longer open to further colonization and that the United States would view such attempts as an act of aggression
