    The Missouri Compromise was a band-aid sollution to slavery in the Louisiana Territory. In 1819, eleven states allowed slavery, and when the Missiouri Compromise was created, it caused an angry debate between the states. Soon the balance between the states was preserved, meaning that the compromise drew a line between the states that allowed slavery and those who didn't.

    Wilmot Proviso
    The Wilmot Proviso was a proposal in congress that specified that slavery should be prohibited in all lands that were aquired from Mexico. This infuriated the Southerners because they wanted slavery to spread. Created by David Wilmot.

    Compromise of 1850
    The Compromise of 1850 caused California to become free as well as New Mexico. Washington D.C. would not allow trading or selling slaves. This was yet another temorary or "band-aid" solution.

    The Fugitive Slave Act required all citizens to help catch runaway slaves. Anyone who aided a slave who suffer the consequences. This act also made people in the North very angry because it went against what they believed in.

    Harriet Beecher Stowe wrote "Uncle Tom's Cabin" and stunned people with her description of slavery. Over all, Stowe made people see just how terrible and horrid slavery was. "Uncle Tom's Cabin" was also a fitional book, yet it had truth in it.

    President Franklin Pierce intended to enforce a fugitive slave act, which then a dispute exploded in 1854. It seemed likely that Kansas and Nebraska would beccome free states, which would mean that they'd be lilkely to be moved into senate. Many people felt that the Kansas-Nebraska act undid or ruined the Missouri Compromise.

    Bleeding Kansas was a battle between proslavery and antislavery forces. This was the first bloodshed over slavery. In this fight over 100 men died and the killing didn't stop for 10 years! The battle became know as "the Civil War in Kansas".

    This was a court case in which the senate decided a slave, Dred Scott was not a "free" man.They decided this on the terms of Dred being more of a piece of property rather than a human being, in which he then did not have the right to sue his owner. It took 10 years until Dred was finally freed by his previous owner, Tyler Blow.

    The Linclon-Douglas debates
    Steven Douglas battled Abraham Lincoln in a series of debates around the state in order to win a seat in the senate. This series of debates introduced the South to Lincoln and they feared him. The South was afraid of the loss of power.

    Attack in which John Brown, an antislavery man, planned to seize the Federal arsenal in order to free slaves.This hastened the advent of the Civil War and inspired many to fight for what they believed in.

    Linclon elected in 1860
    Abraham Lincoln was elected to be the President of the United States in 1860. He was elected even though his name was not on the ballot in Southern states. This pushed the South towards succession.

    This all began when South Carolina held a special convention and voted to secede from the Untied States. Many people still wished to preserve the union. By Febuary 1861, Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, Florida, and Georgia joined South Carolilna and seceded as well. This caused the nation to go to war in order to, as Lincoln wished, "preserve the union".
