The Americans shared the Oregon territory with Indians, Great Britain, Russia, and Spain. The United States were trying to avoid another war with Great Britain and they signed a treaty giving both countries the right to the land. Oregon and Washington were the two states created out of this territory.

Mexico was upset with the United States over the Texas annex so they cut off all ties with the United States, Mexico also removed American settlers and sent them back to the United States. The treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the Mexican-American war. California, Nevada, and Utah were the United States created out of the Mexican Cession.
