    Dred Scott sues for his freedom on the contex that his master brought him to a free state where slavery was illegal. The supreme court ruled on this case 10 years later and determined that he was to be still considered a slave.

    Gold is accidentily discovered in california kicking off a mad rush to find gold.
  • California becomes a state

    California becomes a state after the US captures Mexico city and Mexico cedes the land to America.

    The Fugitive slave law was passed saying people had to return fugitive slaves and that slaves had no right to a jury trial.
  • The Gadsden purchase

    Region of land bought by the US in Arizona and New Mexico.
  • Transcontinental railroad

    The first rail road to go from one side of the country to the other was completed. Helped provide transport.
  • Indian appropiation act

    Claims that American Indians were no longer seen as an independant nation and were subject to the laws of the US.
  • Arizona becomes a state

    Arizona becomes the 48th state to join America.
