  • Loiusiana Purchase Treaty

    With the purchase of land streching from the Mississippi River in the East to the Rocky Mountains in the West, Americans were more optomistic and eager to move into this new expanse and seek a new life.
  • Treaty of Ghent is ratified by US

    The treaty of Ghent ended the War of 1812 and brought with it a sweep of nationalism. This great feeling of nationalism reenforced the idea of Manifest Destiny.
  • Andrew Jackson Sworn in as President

    He promised to expand the country westward bringing to life the idea of manifest destiny.
  • Guerrero Decree

    A Mexican decree outlawing slavery in all mexican colonies, including texas. While the decree was never enacted, it still caught the attention of many in the North.
  • California Gold Rush

    Gold is struck on this date by James W. Marshell and sparks the California Gold Ruch bringing with it 300,000 hopeful people.
  • Fugitive Slave Acts

    Part of the compromise of 1850, and was one of the most controversial acts of the compromise. Forced whites to return runaway slaves to their masters under threat of punishment.
  • Dred Scott Decision

    Dred Scott sued his owner for his freedom and the freedom of his wife. Used precedents from previous cases claiming his freedom on the basis of his residence on free land. His loss set a major precedent for the future of blacks.
