  • The Original 13 Colonies

The American Revolution lasted for 8 years and it weakened the U.S. economy because they had to pay for the military and supplies for the war.
  • The Original 13 Colonies

The United States gained control of the 13 colonies by the American Revolution and then they signed the Treaty of Paris of 1783 to make sure the British stayed out. The Declaration of Independence was a document created by the Second Continental Congress that declared America's independence. Its purpose is to express American citizen's unalienable rights- life, liberty, and the pursuit of hapiness.
  • Northwest Territory

The U.S. obtained the Northwest Territory by a treaty. It was the Treaty of Paris for winning the American Revolution. 5 states were created with the Northwest Territory- Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Wisconsin. and Ohio. For a territory to become a state they had to have free public education, no slavery, approval by Congress, a population of 60,000, have their own Bill of Rights, and have their own Constitution.
  • Louisiana Purchase

We got the Louisiana Territory by purchasing it from the French leader Napoleon Bonaparte for 15 million dollars. The Mississippi River and New Orleans were so important to the U.S. economy because they were the main spots for trade throughout the United States. All of the trade made the economy very strong. President Thomas Jefferson was credited with purchasing the Louisiana Territory and the U.S. spent 15 million dollars on the land. The addition of this land made the U.S. double in size.
  • Adams-Onis Treaty

Southerners were upset with the Seminole Indians because they were raiding U.S. towns and aiding runaway slaves. President Monroe sent General Andrew Jackson and U.S. troops to the Florida border. Jackson invaded Florida to capture Seminole raiders and this began the First Seminole war. These acts were unconstitutional because Jackson did not recieve direct orders from President Monroe. The U.S. gained claims to all of Florida and Spain got claims to what is now Texas
  • Manifest Destiny

Manifest Destiny is the American belief that God gave us the divine right to expand west. We were sure to expand all the way to the Pacific ocean. Americans and the U.S. government believes that God gave them the right to expand westward and take control of new lands.
  • Texas Annexation

Annex means to "take control of, or gain." Americans moved to Texas for land and economic opportunities. The newly created Mexican government allowed slavery and promised to never ban slavery. The Mexican government took away the southerners in Texas' religious rights. They also were forced to become the Roman Catholic religion. Also, Mexico passed immigration laws and requirements for moving to Texas. Finally, southerners were forced to follow Mexican laws.
  • Texas Annexation

The events surrounding Texas becoming a republic were that only 4 towns had a population over 1,000, there were several economic problems, president Houston got rid of a lot of the Texas army, Mexico still considered Texas to be their property, Lamar threatened a military attack on Santa Fe in the Mexican territory, the attack didn't get approved and failed, President Houston ended the fighting, and Mexico and Texas signed a peace treaty. Texas' economy relied heavily on farming and ranching
  • Texas Annexation

Texas' economy relied heavily on farming and ranching and had little industry. They had plently of resources but barely any cash. Mexico made Texas have several problems and caused many arguments because they still considered Texas to be their property. The U.S. did not allow Texas to enter the union as a state because slavery was legal in Texas. With this advantage, the south could make slavery legal throughout all of the United States.
  • Oregon Territory

The British originally shared control of the Oregon Territory. The U.S. was trying to avoid starting another war with Great Britain and this resulted in them signing a treaty. Out of the Oregon Territory, the states of Oregon, Washington, Idaho, parts of Montana, and parts of Wyoming were created.
  • Mexican Cession

The main issue that Mexico and the U.S. argued over was the annexation of Texas and where the border between Mexico and Texas was. The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the Mexican-American war. Under the Mexican Cession, we got 3 states- California, Nevada, and Utah, as well as parts of Arizona, New Mexico, Colarado, Wyoming, and Texas. This increased the size of the U.S. by 25%.
  • Gadsdan Purchase

The U.S. were trying to avoid Mexico changing the border between the United States and Mexico with the Gadsdan Purchase. The U.S. payed $10 million dollars for the land gained in the purchase. From this, the U.S. got the southern parts of Arizona and New Mexico. Manifest Destiny was finally complete with the Gadsdan Purchase because with purchase, the boundaries of the United States were finally fixed. So, there was no question where the seperation between the U.S. and foreign countries were.
