The U.S gained control of this land by fighting the British in the Revolutionary war.The Decleration of Indpendence is the statement of the second continental congress that defined the colonists rights, outlined their complaints against great Britin, and declared the colonies independence.The American Revolutionary war lasted from 1774-1783. It weakend the economy becausd we had spent so much money on the war. -
Northwest Territory
The U.S obtained this land by passing the Land Ordinance of 1785, which set up a system for surveying and dividing public territory. The states created out of the 13 colonies were, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin. The requirements for a territory to become a state was, no slavery, education,Bill of Rights, and 60k people must live in the territory. -
Manifest Destiny
The belief of the Manifest Destiny was the U.S, they thought was sure to expand all the way across the Pacific Ocean. They beileved nothing could stop the growth. The Americans beileved that GOD gave them the right to expand west. -
Louisiana Purchase
We bought the land from France. To give us more land. The Mississippi river was important to the U.S economy because it was easier for trade, and it doubled their size, and made it easier to expand west. Thomas Jefferson was credited for purchasing this land and he spent $15 million. This purchase doubled the land of the U.S. -
Adams-Onis Treaty
Southerners were upset with the Natives because, they were raiding their towns, stealing prperty, and helping the slaves such as trying the make them free. President Monroe sent General Andrew Jackson to the Florida border in April 1818. Jackson's troops invaded Florida to capture seminole, it was unconstitutional because the president didnt want them to attack. The agreement that both the U.S and Spain agreed upon was that Spain got Texas, U.S. got east Florida, and West Florida. -
Texas Annexation
The word annex means, to take control of land and incorporate into a counrty,state etc... Americans moved to Texas becuase they were aloud to bring slaves, and do whatever. The the Mex. Gov't was making slavery illegal to the Southerners. Texas earned it's republic by, making their own Constitution, and got new presidents.Texas had problems with Mex. like, some of Texas's land was in Mex. And Mex was calling it their land, and Texas wanted it, Texas declared themselves as the Lonestar state. -
Mexican Cession
The main issue that led to the Mexican American war was U.S took Texas, and turned it into a state in the U.S. The Treaty that ended the war was the treaty of Guodalupe Hildalgo. The current U.S. states created out the war is, C alifornia, Nevada, and Utah, most of Arizona, and New Mexico, and parts of Calorado, and wyoming. -
Oregon Territory
The counrites that shared this land with the U.S was, Great Britin, Russia, Spain, even Indians were living in Oregon. The U.S was trying to avoid another war with Great Britin, because they were fighting for the oregon Country. So they had a treaty that stated they would share the land. But now they want to expand. They would let Britin have control of Columbia river. The current U.S. states that were created were Oregon, Washington, Idaho, parts of Wyoming, and Montana. -
Gadsden Purchase
The U.S. agreed to purchase this land because they were trying to avoid another war with Mexico, there was words Mex. was getting angry because some Americans wanted all of Mexico. The U.S. paid Mexico $10 million. for the Southern parts which are now Arizona and New Mexico. The Continental boundaries were finally fixed. Which means different continents that we bought, made it easier to make Westward. And make new area.
