    The United Stated gained control of the land because we won the American Revolution.The Decleration of Independence is a document that was created to show the United States Independence.The American Revolution was nine years long, and it weakened our economy.
  • Northwest Territory

    Northwest Territory
    The U.S congress passed the Northwest Ordinance of 1787, the Ordinance created the Northwest Territory. Five states were created out of this territory including what is now; Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Ohio, and Winsconsin. The requirements for a territory to become a state is you must have public education provided for the citizens of the region, no slavery, a population of 60,000 people, and a draft of the Constitution.

    We obtained this land because of the treaty signed in May 2nd, 1803 known as the Louisana Purchase, we bought this land from Monroe and Livingston. The Mississippi River was important to the U.S economy because it made it easier to transport goods. New Orleans was important because it was an industrial city so it made the U.S economy stronger. President Thomas Jefferson is credited with purchasing this land and the U.S spent five million dollars buying it.

    The agreement of the Adam-ONis Treaty, Spain gave East Florida to the U.S and gave up its claims to West Florida. In return, the United States gave up it's claims to what is now Texas. The United States gave up its claims to what is now Texas. THe U.S agreed to take responsibility for up to five million dollars of U.S citizens' claims against Spain.

    The Southerners were upset with the Native Americans because some Americans wanted to settle in the area. They were aiding runaway slaves. President Monroe sent troops under the command of Andrew Jackson to secure the boarder. In 1818, the troops invaded Florida to caoture Seminiole raiders.THis action was unconstitutional, invading someone else's land.

    The belief shared by many Americans in the mid-1800's that the United States was meant to expand across the continent to the Pacific Ocean. Americans and the United States government believed North America was a promised land that god have given them so they could set up a new society.

    The word "Annex" means to take control of land and incorporate into a country, state, etc. The government promised cheap or free land. The land attracted people to come to Texas. Each man could receive 640 acres with additional land for his wife and each child. Other grants offered about 4,600 acres of land for free to every married man. They also promised that they could bring their slaves with them, and they wouldn't say anything.

    Mexico had set requirements for all foreign immigrants.They had to become Mexican citizens, obey Mexican kaws, they had to support the Roman Catholic Church. The Mexican government limited American immigration.In 1830, they made slavery illegal to the Southerners.Four days before the Battle Of Alamo,Texas delegates had met to declare independence from Mexico.They had written a constitution.The Texas constitution made slavery legal.Texans forced Mexican leader to sign a treaty, gave independence.

    Republic is a one house party of government.Texas' problems with it's economy and with Mexico are they have a small population, their economy relied on agriculture, and Mexico refused to honor them as their own country. The U.S didn't allow Texas to enter the union as a state because they legalized slavery and the U.S did not. The South was letting in slaves and allowed slavery and the North did not.

    The Oregon Territory was originally claimed by Great Britian, France, Russia and Spain; the spanish claim was later taken up but the United States. The U.S was trying to avoid a war over the Pacific Northwest of the Oregon Territory with GReat Britian. The current states of California and Alaska were created out of the Oregon Territory.

    The main issue that the U.S and Mexico argued over is that Mexico reacted to the Annexation of Texas by cutting off all diplomatic ties with the U.S. Mexico ordered American settlers to leave California and banned further American immigration. The Mexican government continued to reject Texas. The name of the Treaty that ended the Mexican-American war is the the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidaglo.

    The present day states of California, Nevada, Utah, most of Arizona and New Mexico's northern territory to the United States, were the states created out of the Mexican Cession. It increased the size of the U.S by almost 25 percent.

    Gadsen Purchase
    The U.S agreed to purchase land under the Gadsen Purchase because it expanded the land of the U.S. The U.S government paid Mexico ten million dollars for the southern parts of what are now Arizona and New Mexico. The senate ratified the treaty in March 1848. James Gadsen negotiated the Gadsen Purchase in December 1853. the government paid Mexico, with this purchase continental boundaries were finally fixed.
