    The University of Georgia(UGA) established
    The University of Georgia was established/charted in 1785. In 1784, twenty-thousand acres of land was set aside for these schools to be built. Although even the best of farmers had little education, many believed in education. Abraham Baldwin, the governor of Georgia at th time, helped establish this college. This was one of the first great pushes for education in Georgia's growth.

    The Springfield Baptist Church had been founded by free African Blacks in Augusta. This church was founded in the time when Baptist and Methodist Churches were getting popular. This was an important part in Georgia's growth.

  • The Cotton Gin

    The Cotton Gin
    The Cotton Gin was invented by Eli Whitney in 1793. For a long time, cotton had been a great resource for many things, but was very un-profitable because of the time-consuming effort to pick cotton and seperating the fluff from the seeds. The Cotton Gin had made it all go away. All you had to do was collect the Cotton Gin, put it in the Cotton Engine(Gin), This let it seperate the different parts of the cotton up. This product helped to make Georgia a wealthier state in its growth.

    Louisville was the third capitol made in Georgia in 1796. It was hard for Georgians to get around for business for both the previous capitols(Savahnnah and Atlanta). Lousville stayed as capitol for ten years. The map you see here is the location of Lousville in Georgia today.

    The Roman Baptist Church in Georgia was founded in 1796. This was the first roman baptist church founded in Georgia when Baptist and Methodist Churches were popular.

    The "Holy Fire from Heaven"
    A scandal broke out in the capitol of Georgia when citizens of Georgia discovered that members of the legislature were bribed into selling land in the west to four different land companies. In 1796, protestors rushed into the capitol building, snatched up the Yazoo Act that was signed, and burned it with a magnifying glass as you see in the photo. Protestors called it "The Fire from Heaven".

    The UGA fisrt opened up for students to study in the year 1801. Over Thirty-thousand students study there today. It was very hard these days to get an education, unless you were wealthy. The UGA was made so that people could have free education.

    Milledgeville is the new capitol in the county of Baldwin, voted on by the legislature. Georgia had set aside 3,240 acres of land to build this capitol. The map here is the location of Milledgeville.

    Gold was first discovered in Northern Georgia in Dahlonega. Benjamin Parks had found and discovered gold while hunting dear in the county of habersham(now White County). The first gold mine of Georgia was made. Soon, people would be rushong over to north Georgia in search for gold. While people were finding gold, they began to push the Creek Indians off their homes.

     Cherokee Lose Their Homes
    The Cherokee Indians of Georgia are pushed off of their homes by laws passed by the Georgian Legislature. The first law passed gives rights to white gold rush miners to hurt or even kill Cherokee Indians if they spoke against them. The second law made in 1829 did not allow Cherokee Indians the right to mine for Gold. The picture you see here is a map of White County in Georgia, where the Gold rush took place.

    Georgia began making its first set of railroads in the 1835. By the 1850s, railroads had spread throughout the state. These railroads were an important part of economy in that time. It had helped make transportation in products and people across the state much easier and faster(with the help of the newly innovated engine powered by steam).

    In 1845, Baptist churches from around Georgia gathered together and formed the Southern Baptist Convention. Many prople had traveled far to get here.
  • Women first attend UGA

    Women first attend UGA
    This is the first time women were allowed in this college was in 1918. Since 1801, it has been 117 years since the opening of the college. UGA is the oldest college of its kind in the nation. This college is frequently called Franklin College, because this was the name of the first buildiing built in UGA for the all white-male student college.
