    the Missouri Compromise didn’t apply to new territories, so the issue of slavery continued to fester as the nation expanded. More Northerners came to believed that the expansion of slavery was bad.They did not necessarily object to slavery itself, but they resented the way its expansion seemed to interfere with their own economic opportunity. This helped with westward expansion because there was a question on whether they were to let slavery into the new territories.

    Nearly 40% of Americans lived in the trans Appalachian west, but after a trial by Lewis and Clark, many left their homes in the east in search for economic opportunity. This was inevitable because the western frontier offered independence and mobility for all.

    John O'Sullivan put a name to the idea that helped pioneers move to the western frontier. John said it was America’s manifest destiny. This helped and proved America’s expansion was inevitable.

    Oregon joined as a free state. Polk then declared war against Mexico saying that they invaded their territory. The Mexican American War proved to not be that popular because many Northerners objected to what they saw as a war to expand slavery. This helped the idea that westward expansion was inevitable because many started to become a free state and because the idea of slavery was such a big thing at the time the conflict haunted the process of westward expansion.

    The treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ended the Mexican war and added to the Louisiana purchase of the United states. This made it inevitable because they even got more land.

    an Illinois Senator brought in two new states, Kansas and Nebraska. The Missouri Compromise, stated that both new states would prohibit slavery. However, no Southern legislator would approve a plan that would give more power to “free-soil” Northerners, The Senator they came up with something called “popular sovereignty”: this let the settlers of the territories decide whether their states would be slave or free. This made it inevitable because it made more land for the people.
