Louisiana Purchase
828,000,000 square miles of land was bought by the United States from France. Land included in this was between the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains, and the Gulf of Mexico to the Canadian border. -
British Cession
This agreement was between the U.S. and Britain. This treaty established the boundaries at the 49th parallel between the United States and Canadian territories. It also secured rights for U.S. fisherman and aquired more control for the Oregon Territory. -
Adams-Onis
This treaty was between Spain and the United States, in which the U.S. aquired Florida and the boundary line on the southern border of the Louisiana Purchase was established. -
Texas Annexation
After the Republic of Texas declared independence from Mexico, they asked to be annexed by the United States. Although there was dispute about introducing it as a slave state, the U.S. finally agreed to annex Texas. This also included parts of New Mexico, Kansas, Colorado, and Wyoming. -
Oregon Territory
The Oregon Treaty was made in order to settle dispute between the U.S. and Britain. The U.S. wanted the border to be set at the 49th parallel, but Britain disagreed. Eventually, not wanting to go to war, both countries signed this treaty, and the boundary was set at this parallel. -
Mexican Cession
This treaty, also known as the treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo, made Mexico recognize Texas as a U.S. state. Also, America purchased a large portion of land from Mexico for $15 million, which would later include states and parts of states such as California, Nevada, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, and Wyoming. -
Gadsden Purchase
This was a treaty between the U.S. and Mexico, in which the United States paid Mexico $10 million for 29,670 square miles of land. This land later became Arizona and New Mexico, and also provided land needed for a transcontinental railroad.
