  • Proclamation of 1763

    Britain decided to put this in place to confine their colonists to the east coast. They decided to do so because they needed to keep their colonists at peace, under control, and less likely to fight with the natives. This made it easier for Britain to pay off war debt since their colonists would be easy to tax and less likely to get into another war. This is important since it’s intentions were good, but the colonists were angered by it since they believed that they had the right to move westwar
  • Northwest Territory

    This territory is made up of Ohio, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin and Indiana. The Continental Congress decided to sell the northwest land to gain money for debt. This territory was pro-education and anti-slavery which was a fairly new concept for Americans at the time. Most importantly it was a place where property rights were established.

    This was significant since by purchasing this land our country was able to double its amount of territory. This also enabled us to gain control over the Mississippi river which was very beneficial since it was a more efficient way to trade and move products. We also gained control over the New Orleans trading ports which was just as beneficial as the Mississippi River.
  • Red River Basin

    This area consists of North Dakota and Minnesota and Manitoba(Canadian territory). This territory had very fertile land and was a very beneficial addition next to the Louisiana Purchase.
  • West & East Florida

    West & East Florida
    In 1819 America bargained Spain for florida for five million dollars. This extended the louisiana territory more south which opened up more ports. This solved the problem of people escaping into and coming out of florida since now we had control of the land. As a result less disputes came up.
  • Webster-Ashburton Treaty

    Webster-Ashburton Treaty
    This established a border between Lake Superior and Lake of Woods. This called a final end to the slave trading in the area which was a very important step in American history. It also stated that the Great Lakes would be shared which was also beneficial.
  • Texas Annexation

    Americans did not want Texas to be a free area, they knew it would be beneficial to own such a large close by territory, which is why it was annexed. The only reason some people did not like it was since it would increase slavery.

    This acquisition was so important since it created a border between the U.S. and Cananda. Also it had many fur trading posts which benefited trade. There were also many men and families who came to oregon from mining before in California.Mexican Cessation

    This caused many disputes about slavery. The problem was that they could not decide whether Mexican land could be slave states or not. Since no one could decide it was up to the people living in the territory to decide if they wanted slavery or not.Gadsden Purchase

    This area is made up of both Arizona and New Mexico. This was done in an effort to fix border issues with Mexico and also to prepare for a transcontinental railroad which would help trade and economy. This was the last major territorial purchase made by the United States.

    Russia decided to sell the territory since they realized it would be easily attacked by the British. As a result America decided to buy it to add more land to the country. There were many trading posts in this area along with a diverse group of people living in it.
  • Hawaii

    This was significant since it was the first non-white addition to the U.S. Obviously this is important since beliefs started changing and people became more accepting. This was beneficial since it created many naval bases for America.
