    The first slave act said when there was a runaway slave then a slaveholder could take them to a judge and they would be decided whether they were a runaway slave. If they were they would be sent back to their owner.

    Thomas Jefferson sent James Monroe to purchase the Louisiana territory from France. The deal was made for $15 million and the size of the United States doubled overnight. The price breaks down to $0.03/acre.
  • Acquisition of Florida- Treaty of Adam-Onis

    Acquisition of Florida- Treaty of Adam-Onis
    The US was frustrated that slaves were running away to Florida territory that was owned by Spain. Seminoles were also raiding land in Georgia. Andrew Jackson was sent to patrol the border, but invaded Florida instead. In the end, President MOnroe sent a message to Spain, “govern or get out.” The treaty was signed and we gained Florida.

    The states that were added are Maine and Missouri. Maine is a free state and Missouri was a slave state. At the end of the compromise, any state that was north of Missouri was a free state, it couldn't be a slave state.
  • Trail of Tears

    Trail of Tears
    Andrew Jackson ignored the orders of a treaty with the Cherokee. U.S. troops rounded up about 15,000 Cherokee and put them in prison camps. Local residents burned the native’s homes. Troops then sent the Cherokee west in groups of about 1,000 on a path known now as the Trail of Tears.

    Texas territory was initially owned by Spain. Mexico defeated Spain in the Mexican Revolution and gained the Texas territory., After a long revolution, Texas defeated Mexico and became its own country for 10 years. The US decided to annex (add on) Texas in December of 1845 under President Polk.

    Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo
    This was a treaty that was signed that ended the Mexican-American war. It established the border between Texas and Mexico as the Rio Grande river, It also gave US land known as the Mexican cession, This territory included California, Arizona, New Mexico, Utah, and Nevada.

    James Wilson Marshall discovered the gold. Once the news about got out many people came to a mill where the gold was at and many people were trying to take the gold. San Francisco, California was built because of the rush.

    The Oregon Trail started in Independence, Missouri to northern Oregon, near the Columbia River. The Oregon Trail took about 40 years. The Oregon Trail was used for people to travel north.

    The new territories that were added the the US are Kansas and Nebraska. This act decided whether or not they wanted to be a slave state. The Missouri Compromise was canceled because of the Kansas-Nebraska Act.

    The Homestead Act encouraged the settlement and development of the American West. Each person that bought got 160 acres of land. The four requirements were you have to pay a small filing fee, agreed to work on land and improve it, live there for at least 5 years, and either have to be the head of the family or be 21 years old.

    Transcontinental Railroad
    The two companies that created the Transcontinental Railroad are Union Pacific Railroad and Central Pacific Railroad. The Union Pacific started in Omaha, Nebraska and the Central Pacific started in Sacramento, California. This event is important because now people can be transported fast to the East and West.
