This prevented people living in the colonies from migrating west of the appalachian mountains. Britain did not want them to move because it would be harder to control them and collect taxes. Another reason Britain did not want them to migrate was because they settlers would most likely cause trouble with the Native Americans living there.

Northwest Territory

Feb 28, 1780

The Old Northwest In the mid 1780s, land north of the Ohio River, east of the Mississippi River, and south of the Great Lakes. Continental Congress planned to sell land in that region. It was only one dollar per acre.

Louisiana Purchase

United States bought the Louisiana Purchase from France for $15 million. All the new land bought roughly doubled the size of the United States.

West & East Florida

Mar 1, 1818

American slaves and criminals would go over the Florida border and could not be found. Also, Seminole Indians were coming from Florida to attack bordering towns. Andrew Jackson led a small army to invade the indian land and he destroyed their settlements. Florida was currently owned by the Spanish at that time.

Red River Basin

Texas Annexation

The U.S took over Texas and made it its 28th state. Before this Texas fought with the Mexicans for independence and also just after this Annex ended the Mexican American War started.

Americans wanted to grow sugar in Hawaii because of its good land to grow it on. The U.S overthrew the Queen and set up a large Military base when they went to war with Spain in 1898. Became the 50th state in 1959
