    Spain sold the Louisiana territory to France, and France wouldn’t let us use it as a port for trade. So then we asked to buy New Orleans, but when they went to talk to Napoleon, he surprised us and he doubled it and said he wouldn’t sell only New Orleans, but the entire Louisiana region for 15 million dollars.

    • During the term of Thomas Jefferson’s presidency, the United States gained the Louisiana Purchase from France. The nation doubled its physical size. Jefferson made plans to send explorers across the land. He asked Meriwether Lewis to lead the *expedition, and Lewis asked William Clark to share command. During this voyage they met a native named Sacagawea who helped them communicate and gather food.

    • Texas fought a war to become independent from Mexico.That year the Mexican army attacked and defeated Texan soldiers at the Alamo. However, soon after (six weeks later) the Texans lost the Alamo, Texan troops under Sam Houston defeated the Mexican forces. Texas won its independence but it was its own country, known as the republic of Texas

    So eventually Texas decided to join the American states. For ten years they weren’t officially a STATE, in 1845 they actually became a part of the United States. When we brought in Texas, we found out the Texas border was going to be the Rio Grande, but Mexico disagreed and wanted to keep southern Texas. And we believed that by god we were told to go from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean. (from sea to shining sea) which we did eventually accomplish.

    • So while Mexico was busy we got control of California in 1846 and later on of Mexico City in September 1847.

  • Oregon Country-1859

    • Oregon use to be shared with England because no one really had any good use of it. But once we entered into the westward expansion, and had a plan set to go from sea to shining sea, more people were in the Oregon territory and sharing wasn’t an option any more. In 1846 there were more Americans than British in the Oregon region. (Washington, Montana, Idaho and Oregon.) Oregon officially entered the union in 1859.
