    The Northwest Territory also known as the Ohio River Valley was being sold and gain settlements in the mid 1780’s. Two important Land Ordinances 1785 and 1787, encouraged the colonists to migrate to the west which would expand the settlement of the colonists. The Land Ordinance of 1785 stated that the government would sell pieces of the Ohio River Valley and sell it to people to pay off war debts.     Louisiana Purchase
    On the spring of 1803 Napoleon agreed to offer all of Louisiana for 10 million. However, the United States ended up buying it for 15 million dollars. This was important for the colonists because it was a large price for a large piece of land that doubled the size of the country. It also gave access to the Mississippi River which is a navigable waterways and allowed easier shipping and transportation to the north and south of the United States.

    In 1818 the United States signed the Convention of 1818 with Great Britain to resolve some issues left open by the Treaty of Ghent. The NEW treaty would have the United States occupy the Oregon Territory and northern border of the Louisiana Purchase along with the British. This land that was acquired by the United STates was called the Red River Basin.

    West & East Florida
    West & East Florida was still conquered by the Spanish. American settlers were settle into the area and started to rebel. Adams and Minister Onis comprised that Spain would give East Florida to America and America would renounce all its claim of West Florida. The United States ended up giving Spani 5 million for the damage that the American settlers did. It was annexed in 1821.

    Webster-Ashburton Treaty
    This treaty of 1842 gave new boundary between Maine and New Brunswick and the area between Lake Superior and Lake of the woods. This treated labeled American and British territory. It helped with land disputes and future conflicts.
  • Texas Annexation

    Texas Annexation
    The Texas Annexation of 1845 started when Moses Austin had permission to lead a group of Americans to settle in part of Texas. However, the Americans weren’t the only ones settling; Mexican and European settlers also had come to Texas to settle. Fighting broke out between the Mexican Army and American colonists due to disagreement about slaves. In 1845 the Republic of Texas voluntarily asked to become part of the United States. This was important because Texas would join the union.

    In the August of 1848 Congress created the Oregon Territory after the War of 1812. After the Revolutionary War the Americans gained Spanish occupied regions and had a lot of conflicts due to boundaries. Eventually the British and Americans signed a treaty called the Treaty of Occupation of Oregon. This was important because it gained passageway to the Pacific Ocean.

    In 1848 the United States gained land as result of the Mexican-American War called the Mexican Cession. The Mexican government sold ½ of their land to America for 15 million dollars. This region was important for the Manifest Destiny and expansion to the West in the future.

    Gadsden Purchase
    In 1853 the Gadsden Purchase was enacted. The Mexican government was desperate for money and agreed to sell a small piece of land along the U.S - Mexico Border to the United States for 10 million dollars. This territory was important because the Southern Pacific Railroad was built across the territory.

    The Russian government offered to sell Alaska to the United States. Russia and the United States negotiated on a price on the land; 7.2 million. Alaska was a significant addition to the American territory because of its natural resources. Alaska was annexed in 1867.
  • Hawaii

    Hawaii
    This annexation took place in 1894 where Americans received a foothold in Hawaii due to the Sugar Trade. Americans settled in Hawaii to plant sugar; the planters planned to overthrow the current queen (Liliuokalani). With the help of marines and no approval of the President the settlers took over Hawaii.
