    Louisiana Purchase
    We bought Louisiana from France for about $15 million. This land stretched west from the Mississippi River to the Rocky Mountains. After the purchase, Jefferson sent Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to explore the new area from France.It took two whole years for Lewis and Clark to explore the new area. With the help of a Shoshone woman named Sacagawea, The small group crossed the Great Plains. Other Shoshone helped Lewis and Clark cross the Rocky Mountains to the Pacific Ocean.

    Whiskey Rebellion

    Problems arose in rural western Pennsylvania after Congress passed a tax on American whiskey to raise revenue. Some farmers protested the act violently. By the time more than 10,000 soldiers from several state militias arrived in the area, most of the rebels had left. The Whiskey Rebellion ended in November 1794 without a real fight.

    Hamilton thought that having a national bank would make the economy stronger.
    The bank would create a safe place for the government's money and could make loans to the government and to businesses. Jefferson and Madison didn't like the idea of a national bank because they believed in strict construction of the Constitution. President Washington and Congress agreed with Hamilton and because of that there was a national bank for 20 years.

    John Adams gets elected

    John Adams and Thomas Pinckney were Federalist candidates. Adams received a total of 71 electoral votes and Thomas came in second with a total of 68 electoral votes. Because the Constitution stated at that time that the second place finisher would become the vice-president. So John Adams and Thomas Jefferson worked together.

    John Adams tried to fix the foreign relations between the US and France.There were 3 French agents representing France demanded that the US pay a 250,000$ bribe. They also wanted the US to apologize publicly for anti-France remarks that John Adams made. Also, the agents insisted that the US grant them a multi-million dollar loan before talks would begin. Adams published the demands substituting X, agentsY, and Z for the agent's names.
  • Alien and Sedition Act

    Republicans who criticized Federalist for favoring war with France. To quiet them, the Federalist- controlled Congress pass the Alien and Sedition Acts in 1798.The Alien Act allowed the president to force foreign citizens suspected of anti-government activities to leave the country. The Sedition Act made it illegal to write, print, utter, or publish any false or mean words against the US government or its policies.

    While Andrew Jackson defeated Creek Indian forces at Horseshoe Bend. Meanwhile the British navy was blockading and attacking US seaports. the British captured Washington, setting fire to the White House and other buildings. The British then attacked Fort McHenry, which guarded Baltimore, Maryland. However...... the Americans forced the British to retreat. Next the British attacked New Orleans.
