    in 1834, the federal government had passed an act that designated the entire great plains as one enormous reservation, or land set aside for native americans

    The government set boundaries for the native americans, but the native americans didnt listen and got in conflict with settlers and miners which had tragic results

    The native american tribe (cheyenne) thought they were under protection from the government chose to move back to Colorado's sand creek reserve. But the US commander in the west (General S. R. Curtis, send a telegram to the militia colonel John Chivington saying that he wanted no peace until the indians suffered more. And they went to fight them. there was 200 warriers and 500 women and children camped at sand creek. they killed 150 inhabitants, mostly women and children.

    The warrier crazy horse ambushed captain William J. Fetterman and his company at lodge trail ridge. over 80 soldiers were killed the native americans called the battle "The battle of the hundred slain" whites called it the "Fetterman massacre"

    The Sioux signed the "treaty of fort laramie" which stated that the tribe could live on the reservation near the mississippi river. but the leader never signed it. and the ones who signed it though that they could still hunt on their previous places

    The war broke out again in 1868 but contenued for 6 years, untill general Philip Sheridan gave orders to destroy their villages and ponies, hang their warriors and take their women and children with them home. and that went succesfull for them.

    Colonel Custer's were still in war with the native americans and he found the native americans doing a sundance and some native americans were killed and some americans. When he went to fight at the little bighorn river. But the native americans led by crazy horse, Gall and sitting bull were expecting them and they flanked them and within an hour Custer and all his troops were dead. but the native americans knew that more soldiers would be coming after them so they hid in Canada.

    The congress wanted to "americanize" the tribes so they gave each set of household 160 acres of land or 80 acres to each unmarried adult, from the reservation. But they didnt use all the reservation space. They saved some for the settlers to buy and the money would go to farm tools for the native americans. But in the end the native americans didnt recieve any of the money from the sold land.

    The seventh cavalry--Custer's old regiment gatherd up 350 starving and freezing native americans and brought them to Wounded Knee creek in South Dakota they demanded all the native americans to give up all their weapons, a shot was fired and that triggered the americans to shoot 300 of the native americans.
