  • U.S. Constitution Written

    This replaced the Articles of Confederation and became the law of the United States. It was written in Philadelphia.

  • The Louisiana Purchase

    Bought from France, this land doubled the size of the U.S. President Thomas Jefferson made the deal.

  • The War of 1812

    AKA The Second War for independence. U.S. defeated the British. Andrew Jackson emerged as a war hero by saving the city of New Orleans.

  • The Trail of Tears

    White settlers in Georgia wanted Cherokee lands. President Jackson sided with the whites and ordered the removal of the Cherokee to Oklahoma. Many died.

  • The Mexican War

    A Sequel to the Texas Revolution, this war featured a 4 month conflict over Mexico's northern territory. The US got 1/4th its total territory.

  • The Civil War Begins

    When Abraham Lincoln won the election of 1860, South Carolina led many other southern states in seceeding from the Union. Lincoln declared war to bring them back.
