Democratic-republican candidate and former vice-president Thomas Jefferson was elected president in 1800 and was inaugurated into office the next year in 1801. During his presidency, Jefferson accomplished many things like purchasing the Louisiana territory, stabilizing the United States economy, and repealing and Sedition and Alien Acts.

During Thomas Jefferson's presidency, he bought about 530,000,000 acres of land from the French for a measly $15,000,000. This purchase doubled the size of the United States, strengthening the country greatly and furthering the goal to expand westward.

The Missouri Compromise, created by Henry Clay, was put into action mainly to preserve the power of free and slave states in Congress. It admitted Missouri and Maine into the Union, with Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state.

The Trail of Tears was the forced relocation of thousands of Native Americans from their land. The trip was thousands of miles long and many died of disease, famine, and dehydration along the way. All of this was a result of president Andrew Jackson's Indian removal policy.

Elias Howe patented the first lockstitch sewing machine, an invention which completely changed the way that clothing was produced and allowed for mass production of these products. This invention also caused a higher demand for slavery, as much more cotton was needed to produce all of this clothing.

The California Gold Rush began when James W. Marshall found gold in Coloma California. Days later, California officially became a territory of the United States, and many people flocked to the state in hopes of becoming rich. More than 750,000 pounds of gold was extracted during this time.

National Union (republican) candidate Abraham Lincoln was elected in 1860 and was inaugurated on March 4, 1861. He led the nation through one of the most devastating times, the American Civil War, and abolished slavery in the United States with the Emancipation Proclamation. As president of the United States, Lincoln built up the Republican party as a strong organization. He was re-elected in 1865, but was assassinated just one month into his second term.

Mainly due to conflicts about slavery, a war broke out between the Confederacy and the Union, starting with the events at Fort Sumter on April 12, 1861. United States president Abraham Lincoln and commander Ulysses S. Grant opposed Confederate president Jefferson Davis and commander Robert E. Lee, and the war ended when Lee surrendered to Grand at Appomattox Courthouse in 1865. Months later, Congress passed the 13th amendment which abolished slavery in the United States.
