  • Missouri Compromise

    The Missouri Compromise is passed, allowing slavery in the Missouri Territory
  • Floridais taken by the US after it is bought from Spain

  • Florida becomes an official territory of the United States

  • Law prohibiting alcohol sale to Indians

    President Jefferson passed a law making it illegal for alcohol to be sold to Native Americans. This greatly affected fur trade because alcohol was given to them in exhange for furs.
  • Creek Indian Treaty passed

    The Creek Indian Treaty is passed. The Indian cheifs signed their land over to the government and agree to move west by September 1, 1826.
  • First Commercial railroad company

    The Baltimore and Ohio (B&O) Railroad company is the first common carrier railway in the United States.
  • Great New Orleans fire

    Five thousand bales of cotton were said to have been set on fire, causing a huge, destructive fire in New Orleans. It is said that the fire was started by rebel slaves fromt the area.
  • Indian Removal Act is approved

    The Indian Removal Act was approved saying that Indians had to move west of the Mississippi River, eventually leading to the Trail of Tears
  • First Negro Convention for Free Men

    The first Negro Convention for Free Men was held in Philadelphia by free colored men from New York and Philadelphia. The convention lasted four days and the men decided to boycott all slave-made goods.
  • Trail of Tears begins

    Between October 8th and 10th the Indians began moving along what is now known as the Trail of Tears. They were forced to move west due to the Indian Removal Act, which was passed two years earlier.
  • Battle of the Alamo

    Battle of the Alamo begins in San Antonio, Texas. The battle goes on for thirteen days before the Texans lose. On March 2, Texas was declared free from Mexican rule.
  • Antartica is claimed for America

  • Oregon Trail begins

    The frist wagon train leaves on the Oregon Trail from Elm Grove, Missouri.
  • Texas Congress votes to annex the Republic of Texas

  • Texas is added to the union

  • The United States declares war against Mexico

  • Salt Lake City becomes home for the Mormons

    Over a hundred Mormons move to Salt Lake City, Utah because of a difference in beliefs. This is still home to most of the Mormons in America.
  • Gold discovered in California

    Gold was discovered in California, which eventually lead to the big gold rush.
  • First Women's Rights convention

    The first Women's Rights convention is held in New York. Here the Declaration of Sentiments, which called for equal rights, was signed by one hundred people, both men and women.
  • Compromise of 1850

    The Compromise of 1850 is signed, making California a state, while making New Mexico and Utah territories of the United States.
