  • The Declaration of Indepence

    The Declaration of Indepence
    The Declaration of Independence was created for the colonies to break free from the tyrants of England. This also stated that the colonies were an independent nation. The declaration created a democratic government and made most Americans free. However, the British saw the act as treason and could kill the creators if they lost the war. On July 4th 1776, Congress adopted The Declaration of Independence and proclaimed independence from England. The Americans now had to fight for it.

    Invention of the Cotton Gin
    In 1974, Eli Whitney created the cotton gin in order to remove cotton seeds from the fibers faster. The cotton gin had created many economic and social impacts on the world. Due to the faster rate in which cotton was made, the plantation owners in the south imported large amounts of slaves. Soon after, cotton became a cash crop to the south. With large amounts of slaves entering the country, the north were against slave labor. This created a Civil War between the US and then slavery was ended.

    The Louisiana Purchase
    President Thomas Jefferson bought the Louisiana Purchase from France for around $15,000,000. This was a huge gain for the US. As the United States gained the rights to Louisiana they also acquired many important resources. One of them is the Mississippi River. The Louisiana Purchase is an important event in the United States history. The US nearly doubled in size and this allowed the US to become a major player in world politics.   • The Battle of the Alamo

    The Battle of the Alamo
    The men stationed at the Alamo were a small group of an army that was tasked with defending Texas against a larger Santa Anna army. For a staggering 12 days, the Mexican army attacked the fort. On the 13th day, Anna ordered his men to storm the fort killing all but 7 Texans. The Texans were defeated, however, the Mexicans lost 1000 men. Due to the loss at the Alamo, the Texans fought with vengeance, attacking and killing half of the Mexican Army. This led to Texas becoming an independent nation
  • The Donner Party

    The Donner Party
    A wagon train of 89 people left Illinois. Led by Jacob & George Donner, their destination was Fort Bridger, Wyoming. During the trip the Donner Party decided to take a shortcut through the Wasatch Mountains. However, the Donner Party had to stop. Soon after the Donner party stopped, they had ran out of food. The party decided the only way to survive was to eat the dead. Eventually a rescue team found them, but the team had found cannibalistic actions on the dead. (www.history.com/donner-party)

  • Harper's Ferry

    Harper's Ferry
    John Brown, a abolisionist, wanted to provoke a slave uprising by taking control of the Federal Arsenel in Hapers Ferry, Virginia. On Octboer 16th, 1859, Brown and 18 people raided Harpers Ferry. John Brown wanted local slaves to revolt but not came. Eventually marines raided the compound and executed John Brown for trying to start a revolt.
  • Fort Sumter

    Fort Sumter
    When the Southern States started to break away, Abraham Lincoln responded by taking control of the federal forts in the South, including Fort Sumter. Sumter started to run out of supplies. Lincoln could either send supplies and risk war or let the Sumter fall to the rebels. President Lincoln sent supplies and the South started to attack. After 34 hours of shelling, Sumter surrendered. In response to this, Lincoln ordered 75000 militiamen to quell the uprising. This began the Civil War.

    Battle Of Gettysburg
    On July 1st, 1863, General Robert E. Lee’s men surrounded the small town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, in hopes of attacking a Union army led by George G. Meade. Later that day, the Union fell back, due to the Confederates finding a weak spot in the line. The Confederates pushed, attacking Devil’s Den, Peach Orchard, and others. The Confederates, however, only captured Devil’s Den and Peach Orchard. The Confederates retreated after a Union counterattack. Gen. Robrt E. Lee’s men lost the next day.

    The Founding of the Pittsburgh Steelers
    On July 8th, 1933, Arthur Rooney, “The Chief” founded the Pittsburgh Steelers, one of the most successful teams in sports. The Steelers, began rough and formed with different teams during WWII. The Steelers continued to build with the hiring of Head Coach, Chuck Noll. The Steelers went on to win the Super Bowl in 1974, 1975, 1978, and 1979. Pittsburgh became the leader in Super Bowl wins in 2004 and 2008 with 6 Super Bowl wins. The Steelers continue to be one of the most successful franchises.
  • Operation Overlord

    Operation Overlord
    “Operation Overlord” named D-Day was one of the largest coordinated in world history. The attack was one the Axis-controlled beaches of Normandy, France. On July 6th, 1944, around 156000 Americans, British, and Canadian soldiers stormed the beaches of Normandy. Planning was key and the use of Amphibious Assault Boats helped the allies the beaches. While losing 4000 troops, the allies continued on, liberating northern France. The next year, the Germans surrendered and fighting in Europe was over.
  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Brown v. Board of Education
    Five schools segregation cases were formed together to create the “Brown v. Board of Education.” “Brown” was a 7 year-old girl that had to travel across her city to go to school. Her father and the NAACP sued. On May 17, 1954 the Supreme Court unanimously ruled that school segregation was illegal. However, the next year school segregation was ruled legal. That ruling was difficult to enforce.
  • The Death of Elvis

    The Death of Elvis
    From 1956 through 1958, Elvis dominated the music charts and made the age of rock and roll more popular. By the mid 1970’s Elvis was in bad physical and mental health. He divorced his wife and became indicted to prescription drugs. On the afternoon of August 16, 1977, he was found unconscious in his mansion and rushed to the hospital later, he was pronounced dead.

    On September 11, 2001, terrorists took control of four Airplanes and used them to attack important sites in New York City. The hijackers flew an airplane into each of the two towers that make up the world trade center Killing about 2,500 people. The U.S determined that the hijackers were a part of a group called al Qaeda led by a wealthy Saudi Arabian, Osama bin Laden. In October 2001 the U.S troops took action and drove the Taliban out of power
