    George Washington passed a law saying that U.S. should stay out of other peoples wars specifically the war France and Britain were in. France didn't like that we weren't helping them. Britain would take our sailors and force them into their army.

    The Alien and Sedition Acts
    The 2nd President of the United States John Adams made laws about aliens. The laws stated that the PoTUS can deport any alien from the country if he saw fit. The states fought against it thinking that it worked against freedom of the aliens.

    We helped out Tripoli for many years. They wanted more money and we did not supply. We started a war because of it. This caused us to increase the size of our navy.

    While Thomas Jefferson was president we got a land deal from France to buy 827,000 square miles of land on the west of the Mississippi river. The area included the states that are now Arkansas, Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Nebraska, parts of Minnesota and Louisiana. He then sent out Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to explore the newly owned land.

    France and the British were fighting and the U.S. stayed out of it. Britain would steal U.S. sailors and force them to join the British navy. This caused the U.S. to sign a declaration of war against Britain. U.S. first invaded the British owned land of Canada. There were many boat battles.

    The British after losing allies including Native Americans decided to attack America. They sent ships to the U.S. and burned down The White House and other government buildings. They tried to take over Baltimore, Maryland but failed. After this battle Francis Scott Key wrote The Star Spangled Banner which is now the U.S. National Anthem.

    After the burning of The White House the war ended a year after. Both Andrew Jackson and William Henry Harrison were treated as heroes and later became presidents. In result america felt more free from Great Britain.

    James Monroe threatened Britain not to mess with the Americas. This helped shape U.S. foreign policy.

    John Quincy Adams approved the Tariff of Abominations which made foreign goods more expensive. It caused the south to spend more money.

    The Trail of Tears

    Farmers were taking native american land to use for themselves. Instead of giving the land back to the natives, Andrew Jackson passed the Indian Removal Act sending many "Indians" on a long trail to Oklahoma. It is called the trail of tears because many of the natives traveling to OK died on the way of sickness or other causes.
