  • Tariff of 1842

    The Tariff of 1842 provided for upward revision, taking the average rates back to the level of 1833 before the recent reductions had been implemented.
  • Guadalupe Hidalgo treaty

    The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, signed on February 2, 1848, ended the Mexican-American War in favor of the United States. The war had begun almost two years earlier, in May 1846, over a territorial dispute involving Texas.
  • Fugitive slave act:

    Was Passed on September 18, 1850, by Congress, The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 was part of the Compromise of 1850. The act required that slaves be returned to their owners, even if they were in a free state. The act also made the federal government responsible for finding, returning​ and trying escaped slaves.
  • Treaty of Kanazawa

    March 31, 1854, Japan's first treaty with a Western nation. Concluded by representatives of the United States and Japan at Kanagawa it marked the end of Japan's period of seclusion (1639–1854).
  • Kansas nabraska act:

    The Kansas-Nebraska Act was passed by the U.S. Congress on May 30, 1854. It allowed people in the territories of Kansas and Nebraska to decide for themselves whether or not to allow slavery within their borders. The Act served to repeal the Missouri Compromise of 1820 which prohibited slavery north of latitude 36°30´
