This act added to the number of people not allowed in the country. Homosexuals, idiots, and criminals were now not allowed in the country. -
Chicago Race Riot
There was tension between the whites and blacks that finally exploded in this 6 day period. 38 died, the majority being black and over 500 were injured. -
Harlem Renaissance
This was a time after World War 1 that was the name given to the cultural, social, and artistic explosion that took place in Harlem. -
Roaring 20s
This was a time period of economic prosperity and added a new edge to western culture. -
This decade also became a time of the consumer ecenomy. More products became afforadable for the common household.

18th Amendment
This amendment is what caused prohibition. It allowed government to prohibit the sale of alcohol. -
Flapper
A flapper was a young women who was unconventional for the time period. She was fashionable and just wanted to enjoy herself. -
One thing that helped the economy prosper during this time was the invention of the assembly line. Henry Ford created to sell cars at a cheaper rate but soon everyone was using it. This allowed for mass production and mass consumption.

This was a form of religion that took place in the 20th century. These are the religions thats uphold strict policies and scripture. -

This was a time period after WW1 jazz music and dance emerged. -

This was what all the social conflicts during the time are summed up and called. The problems between balcks and whites, city-dwellers and small town people, and even the new ladies and the old timey ones. -
During this time period buying on credit started to become a popular thing to do. The slogan "Buy Now, Pay Later" became very popular among the middle class.

Marcus Garvey went to Jamica and created the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA). He later brought it to the states in the 1920s. He worked to develop programs to make the life for African Americans better.

Warren G. Harding
He was the 29th president of the United States and he served until his death. He died being one of the most popular presidents because of the all the scandals he had. -
The Great Migration
This was a time when southern African Americans started to move up north. They began to gain their own customs and ways to do things. -
James Joyce's Ulysses
This book was publised in Paris and 500 copies were imported into America but they were seized by the post office and burned for their vulgarity. -
Duke Ellington
Duke was a composer and bandleader of a jazz orchestra. He lead this orchestra for 50 years until he died. They gained popularity at the Cotton Club in Harlem. -
Calvin Coolidge
He was the vice president of Warren Harding and then became the president once Harding died. Cooidge was known as a small government conserative and said very little. He was elected again in 1924. -
Immigration Act of 1924
This act limited the amount of immigrants allowed in the country because the government set a quota. -

These was a book of short stories that talked about war and current events. It used themes such as loss, grief, and alienation. -
Louis Armstrong
During the 1920s Louis was an inventive trumpey player during this time. He influenced tht jazz era and helped make playing solo a thing. -

This book is said to be wriiten to descirbe a cautionary tale of the American Dream. -
The Scope Trial
This was a trial where John Scopes was arrested because he was accused of violating the butler act. The Butler Act was stated that is was unlawful to teach human evolution in state schools. You were not allowed to deny man's origin. -
Nella Larsen - Quicksand
This was a book written by Larsen based on her life as a mixed gril who did not feel like she fit in with her European-American family. -
Herbert Hoover
He was the 31st president and is most known for his New Deal policies. He is also known for being a humanitairan and is one of two presidents to be elected without electoral experience. -
Fall of the Republicans
For most of the time in the 1920s the Republicans were the dominiant political party. They finally had their down fall in 1929 when the great depression came about. -
Agricultural Marketing Act
This act was used to promote effective merchandising techniques and it was used to help agriculture keep up with other industries. -
Black Thurday is the day the stock market crahsed and marked the beginning of the Great Depression.

Black Monday followed Black Thursday and was when the market dropped 22.6% in one day. This triggers similar declines in market around the world.

Severe drought started to hit the Midwest and crops began to die. Since the growned was over plowed and over grazed the dirt began to blow and they called them "the black blizzards."

This was a government corporation that provided financial support to state and local governments and made loans to banks and railroads. -
Public Works Administration
This is when congress put $3.3 billion into public work projects. -
Glass-Steagall Act
This created federally insured bank deposits to help prevent bank failures. -
Agricultural Adjustment Act
This protected farms when the price dropped and also educated them to teach methods of preventing soil erosion. -
Civil Works Administration
Provided the public with jobs that paid $15 a week. -
Civilian Conservation Corps
This sent young men to work at camps to get people out of the city. It caused better health conditions and more money for famlies. -
Federal Emergency Relief Act
This gave money directly to unemployed workers to help them. -
National Industrial Recovery Act
This was created to make fair competition and minimum wages. -
Tennessee Valley Authority
This was when the government built dams to prevent flooding and sell electrictiy. This is also when provate power industries began to come about. -
21st Amendment
This amendment was used to repeal the 18th amendment and made alcohol legal again. -
Securities and Exchange Commission
This new deal program regulated the stock market and resticted margin buying. -
The Dust storms started to spread out of the Dust Bowl area. The drought was the worst ever and covered about 75% of the United States.

This provided part time employment to college and high school students. -

This was to get farmers to bring electricity to farms, but by 1940 only 40% had electricity. -
Social Security Act
This provided pensions, insurance, and aid to blind, deaf, diabled, and dependent children. -

This allowed workers to join unions.
