The German Confederation was created by the Congress of Vienna to replace the Holy Roman Empire. It was created for defense amongst the 39 German States.

Napoleon was defeated at Waterloo by Prussia, and afterwards, Prussia bcame well-known and were conpensated for their assistance. This helped Prussia gain a lot of power, and resources.

Revolts in Paris caused a large number of peasants to revolt in Germany. Word of revolution spread across Germany and inspired many others to join in. The revolution was a failure, and soon after it followed a period of "political repression".

Johann Gustav Droysen states that Germany is weak and needs to join with Prussia to be succesful in their creation of the unified Germany. The merger gives Germany much more support and power than before they joined with Prussia.

Otto Von Bismarck's determination to unify Germany empowered him to capture many different territories. During this expansion, he managed to create a dispute with Austria and other German states.

Prussia wanted to annex Holstein because of its population, so Bismmarck joins Austria to fight Denmark for Holstein. Austria emerges victorious. Austria got Schleswig, and Prussia got Holstein. Prussia made enemies with Denmark, during this though.

Bismarck was able to defeat Austria within seven weeks. After the war, Prussia dissolved the German Confederation and started the North German Confederation with all of the german states except Austria and some of the Austian-Influenced southern states.

Bismarck fooled France into starting the war. When France invaded the German states, the southern states that Bismarck was trying to take over became worried and joined Germany's side.
