  • Oct 12, 1492

    Columbus Finds America

    Columbus wanted to find a new route to India. He went West instead of East, hoping it would be faster. He landed on America and thought it was India.
  • 13 Original Colonies

    When people came to live in America, they settled in colonies. They made 13 colonies, which are now the east coast of the United States(except for Florida).
  • French and Indian War

    Both the British and French had claims to North America, and they started fighting for it. The French had help from various Native American tribes. This war lasted for 7 years and also became known as the Seven Year's War.
  • Boston Tea Party

    Colonists were angry because the British kept taxing them. The British had ust put a tax on tea, and prevented other countries from importing tea, so the colonists were mad. They went on 3 British ships when it was dark and threw hundreds of pounds of tea into the water.
  • Revolutionary War

    On the night of April 18, the British went to Concord to take the militias weapons. Paul Revere warned the colonists and the British were met in the morning by the militia. The first shot fired in the fighting that followed is called "The Shot Heard Round the World". The British finally surrendered on September 3 1783. The Americans were led by George Washington.
  • Writing of the Constitution

    The Constitution was signed in 1787, but it was not used until a year later, when New Hampshire ratified it. The Constitution is still used today as the rules for our government. It was writen by Thomas Jefferson, and revised by multiple people, including Benjamin Franklin and James Madison.
  • Lewis and Clark

    Lewis and Clark were chosen by president Thomas Jefferson to explore the new land, the Louisiana Purchase, and to find a water route to the west coast, the Northwest Passage. They traveled all the way to the west coast, and met many different Native American tribes along the way.
  • Missouri Compromise

    Congress didn't want to change the balance of free and slave states in congress, but they had just made Missouri a new state, so to balance it out, they split Massachusets and created Maine. This added another free state so that Missouri could be a slave state.
  • Industrial Revolution

    Samuel Slater Memorized British factory plans and came to America, where he made a factory. This allowed things to be mass produced, and people also started inventing things. Some big inventions were the cotton gin, the locomotive, and the steamboat.
  • Bleeding Kansas

    Two new territories, Kansas and Nebraska, were becoming states, and the government decided that the people could choose whether it was a free or slave state. This was called the Kansas/Nebraska Act. The people in the 2 states started fighting over which it would be, and in some ways it's the beginning of the civil war.
