  • English colony founded at Jamestown, Virginia

    The first permanent English settlement in North America, settled by a group of men called the Virginia Company. Remained the capital of the Virginia colony until 1699.
  • First Africans brought to North America

    A dutch ship brought 20 slaves to the Jamestown colony, marking the beginning of the slave trade in North America.
  • Pilgrims land at Plymouth

    The landing spot of the Mayflower Pilgrims and the location of the Plymouth Colony. Settled by Anglicans and English separatists who had broken away from the Church of England.
  • Salem Witch Trials

    The hanging of Bridget Bishop of Salem. Started the Salem Witch trials, a series of hearings and prosecutions of people accused of witchcraft in colonial Massachusetts.
  • Start of the French and Indian War

    The start of the French and indian war which involved the France and Great Britain (over colonial expansion) and allies Spain and Prussia. Would continue on to 1763.
  • Boston Massacre

    Armed conflict between patriotic protestors. Led to the death of 3 American colonists and angered colonists on the topic of British colonization.
  • Boston Tea Party

    Boston Tea Party
    A political protest by the Sons of Liberty against British taxation without representation, where crates of British tea were dumped into the harbor.
  • The Declaration of Independence

    The Declaration of Independence
    On this day, the Continental Congress, led by John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, presented the thirteen colonies; soverignty from Great Britain and the formation of their United States of America.
  • Treaty of Paris (End of Revolutionary War)

    The Treaty of Paris, signed in Paris by King George III of Great Britain and representatives of the United States of America, ended the American Revolutionary War.
  • Start of Shay's Rebellion

    A series of protests from 1786-1787 led by Shay against tax collections and high taxes, mainly in MA. Brought forth talks on the topic of state and national government powers.
  • Constitution Ratified and in Effect

    The Constitution was ratified by two thirds of the nation by this point in time (New Hampshire was the 9th state), and it was mutually agreed that the Constitution would go under effect under this day.
  • Whiskey Rebellion

    In an effort to fund war debt incurred during the American Revolution, Alexander Hamilton presented a program to tax distilled liquors, mainly whiskey. However, rebellions started as a result, and ended with the use of United States troops.
  • Lewis and Clark Expedition

    Start of the Corps of Discovery Expedition. Led by Lewis and Clark to cross and map the western portion of the United States, shortly after the Louisiana purchase. Was endorsed by Thomas Jefferson.
  • War of 1812

    The War of 1812 was fought between the United States and Great Britain and its allies. The war happened after the British attempted to restrict U.S. trade and the U.S.'s own desire to expand their territory.
    Led to the burning of Washington D.C. and United States victory.
  • Missouri Compromise

    A compromise created by Congress to keep the balance of power of slave and free states. States above the MIssouri line would be free states, while states under would become slave states. In accordance, Missouri would enter as a slave and Maine would become a free state.
  • Trail of Tears

    A series of forced relocations of Native American nations, including the Cherokee, Muscogee, Seminole, etc. from their homelands to the Southeastern U.S.
  • Independence of Texas

    Tezas gained independence from Mexico in 1836, having borders that encompassed present-day Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado, Wyoming and New Mexico, based upon the Treaties of Velasco.
  • Mexican American War (Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo)

    A war that followed the wake of the 1845 annexation of Texas. A U.S. effort to gather Texas within its national power. Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo officially ended the war with war negotiations. (1848)
  • The California Gold Rush

    http://www.history.com/topics/gold-rush-of-1849 Gold discovered at Sutter's Mill in 1848 prompted people around the U.S. to travel to California in search of gold. As a result, California become population with gold mining towns and the like.
  • The Compromise of 1850

    A compilation of five laws dealt on the issue of slavery. As a result, the Fugitive Slave Act was amended, the slave trade was abolished in Washington D.C., and California was allowed to enter the Union as a free state.
    2 other laws dealt with territorial boundries between Tesxas and New Mexico and Utah.
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act

    Overturned slavery restriction from Missouri compromise. In return, popular sovereignty determined whether or not states would enter as free or slave.
  • Abraham Lincoln Elected President

    Republican Abraham Lincoln argued against the spread of slavery. Faced Douglas in the presidential elections and won.
  • Civil War

    Ended in 1865
    Civil war between the Confederacy and the Union after the election of Abraham Lincoln over states' rights and the issue of slavery. Started with the attack on Fort Sumter.
  • Transcontinental Railroad completed

    Completion of a 1,907 mi. contiguous railroad line to connect San Francisco Bay with the U.S. rail network at Iowa.
  • End of Reconstruction

    Reconstruction of state and society directly following the Civil War. Led by moderates Lincoln and Johnson and the radical Republicans.
