    A 29,670 region of land that the US purchased from from Mexico. This purchase was the last substantial territorial acquisition in the contiguous United states. Built a transcontinental railroad and restored/reinforced the borer issues between the U.S and Mexico.

    Kansas-Nebraska Act and Republican Party Formed
    Allowed Kansas and Nebraska to decide for themselves whether or not to allow slavery within their borders. This act caused a lot of bitterness because Kansas with slavery would violate the Missouri compromise. Republican party opposed the expansion of slavery into new territories and selected statewide slate of candidates.

Conflict started from the controversial topic on rather Kansas would allow slavery or outlaw slavery. Thousands of pro-slavery men marched into Kansas ready to fight. This conflicted time held 56 causalities by time the violence ended. Also is a leading cause to the civil war and the establishment of the Republican party.

    Lincoln- Douglas Debates
    A series of 7 debates between Lincoln (Republican) and Douglas (Democratic) goal was to win the favor of the Illinois general Assembly. Main issue discussed in all seven debates was the issue of slavery. Lincoln wanted to stop the expansion of slavery but never mentioned anything about abolishing it and Douglas wanted slavery to expand.Douglas won the debate but Lincoln gained a lot of popularity.
  • John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry

    John Brown's raid on Harper's Ferry
    A group of men attacked the town of Harper's Ferry in Virginia in order to get weapons to give them to salves. So they could start a rebellion. The group was successful in obtaining arms but was soon surrounded by general Lee's army. 10 of the men were killed and John Brown ( the leader) was captured and tried for treason. The north viewed John as a hero, while the south viewed him as a terrorist.

    The Democratic party splits over the issue of slavery. The republican nominated Lincoln. Lincoln won the election without winning any electoral votes from the south. Lincoln name wasn't even on the ballots in the south. Lincoln won 39% of the popular vote. The south was completely outraged that Lincoln won. A main cause leading to the Civil war. Causing the lower south to secede starting with South Carolina.

    The confederate states of America form when 7 states leave the union- they elect Jefferson Davis from Mississippi as their president. Fighting begins with the confederate trying to take Fort summer. North strategies was the Anaconda plan, Navy Blockade Coast, and for now staying away from the salve issue to not upset their border states. South strategies were to stay on the defensive end, and obtain foreign help. The confederate won the first major battle at Bull Run Virginia.

    Law to Free all enslaved people in rebellious states. No one enforced this. Was basically set to to show foreigners that they should not help the confederate because all they wanted is slaves.

    Union General Sherman led 60,000 soldiers on a 285 mile march from Atlanta to Savannah, Georgia in order to frighten Georgia's civilian population into abandoning the Confederate cause, and burning down/destroying cities as they marched. Andrew Johnson the former vice president becomes the 17th president of the United states. This upsets the North because Johnson is originally from the south.Reconstruction plans. Slavery is officially abolished thanks to the creation of the 13th amendment freeing over 400 people. The kkk has formed.

    one of the reconstruction amendments. Addresses citizenship rights and equal protection of the laws. This amendment gave citizenship to any one born in the US. Johnson became the first president to go to trial for impeachment in U.S history.
