French captures cities on Mexican soil. Mexico, led by Ignacio Zaragoza, marched to meet them, even though they were not equipped as well as French armies.

French attack, starting the Battle of Puebla. Mexico held their own and protected their forts. When the French retreated from low supplies and bad weather, Mexico attacked. Mexico had won by killing almost 460 and wounding many more.

General Ignacio Zaragoza died of typhoid, leaving the Mexican army without a leader. Porfirio Díaz soon took the role.
