To what degree does this time period represent a period of progress or decline?

  • +1 Komagata Maru

    +1 Komagata Maru
Komagatu Maru arrived in Vancouver, having sailed with 376 Indians aboard, who were refused admittance to Canada. After two months in the harbour, and following an unsuccessful appeal to the BC Supreme Court, the boat sailed back to India, and very few passengers were acepted. After that though Canada ammended some laws in the immigration act to allow a narrow ammount of people to immigrate from India. It is progress because Canada changed for the better after the events of Komagata Maru.
  • Period: to

-1 First Nations and their sacrifices for Canada

For the amount of help that First Nation Soldiers delievered and what they recieved in return was unjust and disrispectful.
  • Period: to

    +2 Scienctific and Technological innovations

Amid the war, scientific and technological inventions were being thought of and created to get the upper hand on the opposition.
  • -1 Black Canadians attempting to serve.

-1 Black Canadians attempting to serve.
Black Canadians were not allowed to serve in any battalion and had there owned battalion named the No. 2 Construction Battalion was created on July 5, 1916. Instead of allowing Black Canadians the right to fight and protect their country, the White majority showed prejudice and discrimination instead of fair treatment even during something as serious as war.
  • -2 Federal Election of 1917

    -2 Federal Election of 1917
Most Canadians were furious as the Conscription which stated that all remaining men who were legible from service were required to serve. Most Canadians that were of non-British descent and veterans opposed the idea of fighting for a country that they believed did not respect them, or they didn't like the idea of sacrificing their lives for a war they didn't consider theirs. This was a state of decline because it created anger and retaliation in Canada. That is why I would consider it a decline.
  • -1 Womens rights and the right to vote

-1 Womens rights and the right to vote
While womens rights were progressing in the right direction it was not until many years after the war, when womens rights changed for the better. But in this time period it was a slight decline.
  • -1 low wages and unemployment

When soldiers returned jobs were needed so unemployment rates increased as more people got fired, and with the excessive workforce and smaller amount of money wages were decreased.
  • -1 Union Government and the effect on Canada

-1 Union Government and the effect on Canada
Near the end of the Union Governments term the Conscription fueled anger and rage in people who did not want to participate in war. Canada did not gain much from the war as it was only considered a middle power in the 1940s long after WW1.
  • +2 Armistice decloaration

    +2 Armistice decloaration
WW1 was declared over, and had lasted since the 28th of July 1914 to the 11th November 1918. 650,000 men and women from Canada served and about 66,000 gave their lives and more than 172,000 were wounded.A total of 20 million deaths in total including civiallions, from 1913-18 Canadas national debt increase from $463 million to $2.46 billion, an enormous ammount at that time.
  • 0 Chinese head tax abolished in 1923

0 Chinese head tax abolished in 1923
The head tax increased to $100 in 1900 and finally to $500 in 1903, and then in 1923, it was abolished completely. That was not necessarily a good thing because the Chinese immigration act was introduced, which restricted any sort of immigration from Chinese people for 24 years. So no progress or decline was made, maybe a small amount of decline for being completely restricted.
