On June 28th, Serbian nationalists assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife while he was going through Bosnia and Herzegovina. The nationalists were mad because they believed that those territories were the property of Serbia (and not Austria-Hungary). Austria-Hungary immediately concluded that Serbia was behind this, and a month later, they made harsh demands from Serbia, with the intent to start a war. Historians often agree that this is the main event that started World War One.

Eventually, celebrations died down, and the new focus was getting Americans back into America.
