Development of the indie rock band Pixies

  • Formation

    The first two core members Joey Santiago and Black Francis formed a band sometime in January of 1986.
  • First mini-LP (long-play aka album) Come On Piligrim

    First mini-LP (long-play aka album) Come On Piligrim
    Come On Pilgrim showcased much of the Pixies' variety and set up the beginnings of many trends in their music. It includes two songs partly sung in Spanish ("Vamos" and "Isla de Encanta") which drew upon some of Francis's experiences in Puerto Rico (Isla de Encanta is an alteration of the island's nickname, Isla del Encanto meaning "isle of enchantment").

    Surfer Rosa is the first full-length album by the American alternative rock band Pixies, released in March 1988 on the British independent record label 4AD. At the end of 1988, Surfer Rosa was named one of the year's best albums on English critics' year-end lists. Independent music magazines Melody Maker and Sounds named Surfer Rosa as their album of the year; NME and Record Mirror placed the album 10th and 14th, respectively.

    Bossanova is the third studio album by the American rock band Pixies. It was released in August 13, 1990 on the English independent record label 4AD in the United Kingdom and by Elektra Records in the United States. The album's sound, inspired by surf rock and space rock, complements its lyrical focus on outer space, which references subjects such as aliens and unidentified flying objects. UK magazine Select made Bossanova their album of the year for 1990.[

    Trompe le Monde is the fourth studio album by the American alternative rock band Pixies, released in 1991 on the English independent record label 4AD in the United Kingdom and by Elektra Records in the United States. After the surf-pop of Bossanova, the album saw a return to the abrasive sound of the band's early albums.
  • Break-up

    In January of 1993 the band broke up for a variety of reasons. Simply put, frontman Black Francis and bassist Kim Deal didn't get along very well.The fans fell in love with Deal, and Francis got jealous. He froze her out of their later albums, causing her to launch the Breeders as a side project. Over the next decade, he didn't speak to Deal once.
  • First reunion concert

    First reunion concert
    The Pixies played their first reunion concert on at The Fine Line Music Cafe in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and a warm-up tour through the U.S. and Canada was followed by an appearance at the Coachella Festival. The band then spent much of 2004 touring throughout Brazil, Europe, Japan, and the U.S. The 2004 reunion tour reportedly grossed over $14 million in ticket sales. The band toured and produced music together for the next 9 years.
  • Kim Deal's Departure

    Kim Deal's Departure
    The fact that Kim Deal has left the band was announced by the band's Twitter profile Deal has since posted new solo music on her website and the remaining Pixies have welcomed her to come back as her schedule with her new band allows. Two weeks later, the band released a new song, "Bagboy", as a free download via the Pixies website. The song features Jeremy Dubs of Bunnies and formerly of the Bennies on vocals in place of Deal.
  • New member Kim Shattuck

    New member Kim Shattuck
    On July 1, 2013, the Pixies announced the addition of The Muffs and The Pandoras guitarist and vocalist Kim Shattuck, who would be replacing Deal for the band's 2013 European tour.
  • Release of Indie Cindy

    Indie Cindy is the fifth studio album by the Pixies. It was the band's first album since 1991's Trompe le Monde, and the first Pixies album not to feature bass guitar player Kim Deal.
  • Present

    In 2015 it was revealed that the Pixies would go on tour with former Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant for a series of dates across North America. As of now, the band is scheduled to play at the variety of festivals across US and Europe.
