    The Mongols conquer Kievan Rus
    In the 1200's Mongol warriors conquered Kievan Rus. Under the rule of the Mongols Kiev lost most of its power. Many slavs or Russians moved and made new settlements or trading posts. One small trading post was named Moscow.

    Moscuvy
    The trading post of Moscow later became the center of trading of a brand new slavic territory called Muscovy. Muscovy became the country that we now know as Russia.
  • Jan 22, 1440

    Ivan III

    Ivan III
    Ivan III took up the throne of Russia on January 22 1440. He was 22 years old. Ivan's first five years of ruling were very uneventful, But soon Ivan started conquering lands and defeating his enemies. His people nicknamed him Ivan the Great. Ivan's reign and life ended on October 27 1505.

    Ivan IIII
    On January 16 1547 Ivan IIII the grandson of Ivan III declared himself czar of Russia. Ivan like his grandfather started defeating his enemies but instead of being called Ivan the Great he was called Ivan the Terrible. Ivan had a secret police who killed anyone who defied him. One time Ivan was so angry that he sturck and killed his son with an iron pole. Ivan's reign and life ended on March 28 1584.

    Peter the Great an emperor of Russia built a new capital called St. Petersburg.St. Petersburg was a large city and attracted many traders and merchants because itwas a port city.

    The French invade Russia
    In 1812 the French army led by Napoleon Bonaparte invaded Russia. Their plans were to conquer Russia but the Russians didn't like that idea at all. The harsh cold winter of Russia was the perfect weapon and the good thing was it didn't cost any money to build. The French were running low on supplies and eventually they retreated.

    A man named Nicholas the II started his reign over Russia. Nicholas got married and had four kids. Soon World War 1 started and Russia entered the fight. But soon Nicholas pulled Russia out of the war. The people blamed Nicholas for the poor effort in the war and started to revolt. The people wanted a new form of government called Communism. Nicholas and his family were soon taken prisoner and shot. After that communism started and nobody heard any more about the last Czar.

    After the czar's death a man named Lenin took over the government. He put the government in control of everything and started communism. He made super sized country called the Soviet Union. Lenin feared invasion and moved the capital from St. Petersburg inland to Moscow.

    After Lenin's death a very harsh man named Joseph Stalin took over the government. Stalin was just like Ivan IIII Stalin had a secret police who killed anyone who didn't like the dictator. Stalin was dictator during World War 2 and was teamed up with the US, France and UK. Later on in the 40's to the 90's the Soviet Union and US were in a time of period when there was a chance of war for world influence. Because there was no actual battles and the conflict didn't get heated it was the Cold War.

    In the early 1990's Communism was starting to fall. The Berlin Wall that had been put up in Germany to seperate the western part of Germany and the eastern part was torn down. From there everything went downhill. Communism feel and every country in the Soviet Union became independent.

    The people of Kievan Rus convert to Eastern Orthodox Christianity
    In AD 988 the people of Kievan Rus converted to Eastern Orthodox Christianity. Missionaries brought this form of Christianity to Russia from the Byzantine Empire.
