Timeline of Events Leading to Federation

  • Earl Grey called a cooperative federal system for Australia

    Britain's Colonial Secretary, Earl Grey called a cooperative federal system for Australia with a federal general assembly that was responsible for the customs and the tariff jobs, but dismissed his saying when they were aroused but the oppositions in the other colonies.
  • NSW Committee established an assembly for the colonies

    The Constitutional Committee of NSW Legislative Council endorsed establishing for a general assembly for the colonies. When William Charles Wentworth chaired the Committee, he recommended installing a general assembly of the colonies to deal with tariffs, railways, gold, licenses and lighthouses. The Council approved the recommendation but the rest of the colonies did not, this made it absurd for the British government to keep up.

    John West argues for Federation

    John West argued the case for Federation in Launceston's Examiner, Hobarts Colonial Times and the Sydney Morning Herald. The journalist Rev John West who founded the Anti Transport League in Launceston and later became convinced for all of the colonies to form a federal union.

    Federal Council was formed

    Back in 1867 Henry Parkes suggested that Australia should form a Federal Council. In 1883, this proposal was established when Service and McIlwraith started a campaign for Federal Union.
  • Australasian Federal Council was established

    The British Parliament established the Australasian Federal Council. This council included Fiji who first attended in 1888. This Council was established to provide the means of legislating on eternal matters.

    The First Colonial Conference

    The First Colonial Conference was held in London. Members from all of the British Colonies came together to confer about the common concerns, especially defence and communications. The Australian Colonies conferred a collaborative front to the British Government on a French Activity in the New Hebrides.
  • Sir Henry Parkes makes a speech in Tenterfield

    While Sir Henry Parkes was Premier of NSW, he made a speech in Tenterfield and called upon the colonial governments "to unite and create a great national government for all Australia" Henry Parkes speech pointed out that that in favor of NSW he was finally prepared unite with the other with the other colonies in the direction to Federation. In response to this proposal, the other colonies premiers organised a meeting to be held in 1890.
  • Resolutions for the Constitutional Convention

    Some of the constitutional convention candidates met to revise some of the problems that were revised by Henry Parkes. Once these revolutions were solved and then put forward to Parkes for the debate for the ensuing of the convention.
  • The First Constitutional Convention

    The first constitutional convention was held in Sydney. This was when seven delegates from each colony and there was also three people from NZ. All of these people agreed to adopt the name "Commonwealth of Australia". After this they drafted up a constitution. This event did not have an exact date so it said that it goes over the dates of March and April
  • Labor Party was formed

    Labor League was formed in NSW and the United Labor Party in SA. Australians oldest political party, were the origins of the Australian Labor Party. The Labor Party members were elected to the SA parliament and later the NSW parliament .
  • Proposal to unite NSW and VIC

    The proposal to unite NSW and VIC was made by Sir George Dibbs the Premier of NSW. The Premier was known to be cool towards Federation. Suddenly, the Premier of NSW was drawn towards the VIC Premier to begin a unification, this would soon come together with the smaller colonies. This proposal was ignored.
  • Federation Meeting in Melbourne

    The AFL of VIC was arranged a large Federation meeting at the Melbourne Town Hall. This was addressed by the premiers of Victoria, New South Wales and South Australia. Later in this year SA formed an AFL as well.

    There was a vote in Victoria and many of the Victorians voted yes, woman were allowed to vote at this time. Aboriginal Men were also allowed to vote in each colony.

    Many Tasmanian citizens voted yes for the referendum draft Constitution. At this time women were allowed to vote as well as aboriginal people.

    Many South Australian citizen's voted yes for the federation vote. At this time women and aboriginal people were allowed to vote.
