The six states of Australia were made and changed during the first half of the 19th century. Queensland is the last state to be formed, as it separed itself from the New South Wales on June the 6th, 1859. It also became a "self governing" colony, which meant that all the states of Australia had this status by now.

From 1788, Australia had been a penal colony. This status ceased to exist after 1868, when the final convict ship, the Hougoumont, landed in western Australia on the tenth of january, 1868.

In 1891 ,delegates of the six colonies of Australia met in order to discuss the formation of an independent state, outside of the rule of the british crown.

On january the 1st 1901,the six colonies became the commonwealth of Australia, made up of six states : Tasmania, the New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and Victoria.
