    • MA and VA object. Fear abuse of personal rights. Promised a bill of rights. They ratify RI
    • RI refuses to ratify until 1790 . Still a close vote
    • Bill of rights: 10 Amendments

    • The only election to elect a vice president and President. John Adams was President and Thomas Jefferson was the vice president. John Adams becomes President and Thomas Jefferson becomes vice president .

    • Jackson wins most popular votes, but the electoral vote in a split
    • Adams wins the election

    2. Outlawed the slave trade in DC
    3. Remaining territories would be able to determine their slave status through popular sovereignty. No laws would be passed regarding slavery in that land
    4. Redefined the boundaries of TX The fugitive slave act

    - Democrat Nominee. Minister to GB. Goal was to maintain the union. Appealed to southerners, border states, and northerners who feared that the election of Fremont would tear the nation apart
    - Fremont: Republican famous for his explorations west
    - Filmore: Know-nothing party. Taylors VP and became president when he died
    - Buchanan wins
    - Proves the republican party is a legitimate force
  • Democratic Party Splits (1860)

    • Democratic Party is split. Southern Democrats want slavery as a part of their platform. Northern Democrats support Popular Sovereignty
    • Northern Democrats won the platform vote. Nominate Stephen Douglas
    • S Dems separate. Refuse to support Douglas. Nominate their own candidate: John C. Breckenridge
