  • Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Uncle Tom's Cabin

    Uncle Tom's Cabin was written by Harriet Beecher Stowe which was about the wrongs and evils about slavery. But both Southerners and Northerners believed the book misrepresented slavery. The book would lead to the divines of North and South because Northerners became stronger with their dislike of slavery while Southerners were angry about the book because it made slave owners look evil. Since there was even a stronger split between both sides it would lead to bigger issues and eventually war.
  • Republican Party

    Republican Party

    The Republican Party was made in a meeting by the Whig Party in Wisconsin. Many supporters were northerners and the first Republican candidate was John C. Fremont. The Republican Party led to a divide of North and South because Southern slave states began threatening secession if Republicans won the 1860 election. When the President Abraham Lincoln who was a Republican won the election South Carolina seceded the Union and others followed which would cause the civil war in 1861.
  • Kansas Nebraska Act

    Kansas Nebraska Act

    The Kansas Nebraska Act repealed the Missouri Compromise and instead let the 2 new territories have popular sovereignty over slavery. Not everyone liked this idea and it would cause "Bleeding Kansas" that was violent activists of both sides fighting over slavery. This Act leading to Bleeding Kansas caused the country to be divided and would lead to war due to the violence.

    Bloody Kansas was violent fights and tension between anti and pro slavery supports and was caused by the Kansas Nebraska Act. This event would led to a divide between North and South by dividing people in support and against slavery even more and would later lead to the Civil War because there was already fighting.

    The Brooks-Sumner incident was between Charles Sumner and Preston Brooks where Brooks bear Sumner with a cane on the floor of the US Senate Chamber. This was after a speech Sumner gave which Brooks didn't like. This would lead to the division of the North and South because it maddened those in support of Sumner and would lead to war over slavery because that was what Sumner was giving his speech about.

    The 3 candidates of this election included James Buchanan Jr, John Charles Fremont, and Millard Fillmore. James Buchanan won this election and he was a Democrat. The election took place during the Bleeding Kansas which continued splitting the country because of slavery. This election would later lead to war continuing on with the next election with similar points.

    Dred Scott was part of the U.S. Supreme Court Case Dred Scott V. John F. Standford, the issues brought to the case were, If Scott was a citizen of the United States would he be entitled to sue in federal court for the protection of his rights?, Did Scotts residence in free territory make him a free , and Is it constitutional for Congress, through the Missouri Compromise, to ban slavery in the territories. This case split the Union by the decisions of the case and led to war because of it too.

    This Constitution was a pro slavery document for allowing slavery in Kansas. It had things like clauses for keeping slavery and a bill of rights without slaves included. This would divide the North and South more because Northerners didn't like this but Southerners supported it. It would eventually lead to War because of tensions in politics due to slavery.

    This speech was given by President Abraham Lincoln and was given before he was elected. In this speech he talks about how the country cannot be half free and half slaves because it's too problematic. He warned the country by saying "A house divided against itself cannot stand". This speech divided the North and South more because the anti-slave supporters became stronger in their believe but pro-slave supporters disliked the speech. This speech would lead to the War by angering the South.

    Lincoln Douglas Debates were 7debates between Stephen Douglas Abraham Lincoln in 1858 for the 1858 Illinois senatorial campagin. The issue they mostly discussed was about slavery which had divided the country with different opinions. Since the main focus at these debates was slavery it would also lead to war because of two different groups with strong feelings about slavery that affected both politics and society. These debated lasts from August 21, 1858 to October 15, 1858.

    Harper's Ferry is most famous for the John Brown's raid. An armed band of abolitionists that were led by John Brown carpeted citizens and seized the federal armory and arsenal. This divided the country and would led to war because the South became fearful of the slave rebellions and led to violence due to disagreements about the Austin of slavery.

    John Brown would be executed in 1859 due to the unsuccessful raid at Harpers Ferry and was found guilty for treason at his trial in Virginia. His execution divided the North and South more because those who were pro slavery agreed with his execution while this who were anti slavery didn't like his execution because he was fighting for slaves. This would later lead to war because tensions grew from his death especially those who thought he didn't do anything wrong.

    John Breckinridge, John Bell, and Stephen Douglas. Lincoln won with the Electoral College votes. This election divided both sides mainly because of the issue of slavery which Lincoln wanted to get rid of slavery. Southern slave owners were angered by Lincolns win and it would later led to secession and the Civil War.

    The first state to secede from the Union was South Carolina due to the win of President Abraham Lincoln which South Carolina had already threatened to leave if he won. Many southern states didn't like Lincoln because he wanted to get rid of slavery which southern slave owners feared and that why they wasted to secede the Union. Sucession divided the North and the South even more and led to the Civil War in 1861 after Lincoln was fed up.

    In his first Inaugural Address he stated he didn't want war and wanted to keep the Union united and told slave Staes he wouldn't take their slaves away. But this would only would not last because the South would began leaving the union because they didn't like Lincoln as president and would lead to the civil war because of the divided Union.
