Between 1788 and 1850 the English sent over 162,000 convicts to Australia in 806 ships.
These convicts had been sent to Australia as the jails in Britain were getting way too over crowded, and there was no other place for the criminals to go. The way to overcome these problems was to set up a new penal colony in the land discovered by James Cook. The convicts would be transported, never to return to Britain.
Very few convicts new how to farm, and the soil around Sydney cove was poor. -
