    Jefferson and Burr were in the running for president for 1800. The vote in the Electoral College was a tie. They spent days trying to find a winner of the two in the House. Eventually, one Federalist didn't vote for Burr. The Twelfth Amendment was added to the Constitution to prevent a tie from happening again. From then on, one ballot was for president and one was for vice president.

    Jefferson had many goals he planned on accomplishing while being president. He wanted to reduce the national debt and cut down on military expenses. He limited the number of federal workers and got rid of most federal taxes.

    Piracy was very common in the countries of West Africa. Pirates required countries to pay tribute in order to not be attacked. Jefferson refused to pay tribute to the ruler of Tripoli. This led to Tripoli capturing the "Philadelphia'' and throwing the crew into jail. This caused one Navy captain to raid the ship and burn it to prevent Tripoli to use it. This stopped Tripoli from forcing the U.S. to pay tribute. The U.S. did, however, have to pay $60,000 to free the prisoners from the ship.
