The "Yippies" are officially founded in a New York flat by Abbie Hoffman, Anita Hoffman, Jerry Rubin, Nancy Kurshan, and Paul Krassner. The term "Yippie" was coined by Krassner and Hoffman on New Year's Eve 1967. The Yippies would live on strong through the 1970's and 80's and had presence during the 1990's as well, where other groups began to surface such as "Code Pink"

The Festival of Life was a 6 day Festival which would counter the "Convention of Death". The Yippies promised to "blend pot and politics", "to put LSD in Chicago's water supply" among other satirical claims that were of course never satifised. The Festival ended on the 30th of August, 1968, through many clashes with riot police.

The first pieing was carried out by Tom Forcade, when he pied a member of the President's Commission on Obscenity and Pornography in 1970. Milwaukee Yippie Pat Small was the first person to be arrested for a pieing, following a hit on a Miami alderman prior to the convention protests in 1972. Aron "The Pieman" Kay became the best-known Yippie pie-thrower – he attacked people including Sen. Daniel Moynihan, ex-CIA head William Colby and conservative columnist William F. Buckley.

The Youth International Party invaded Disneyland and hoisted the "New Nation Flag" at the city hall. Upto 23 of 200 Yippies were arrested and the park was closed early for the day.

Jerry Rubin and London Yippies took over The Frost Programme when he was the guest on the British TV program. Amidst the action, a Yippie fired a water pistol into host David Frost's open mouth. A commercial break was called and the show was abruptly ended.

Throughout the 1970's and into the 1980's the Yippies held many Marijuana smoke ins. On August 7, police in Vancouver attacked a smoke in which resulted in the Gastown Riot - which is now one of the most famous protests in Canadian history.

Yippies and Zippies (a younger YIP offshoot) staged protests of which some were more militant and larger than those in Chicago 1968. After these events, the Zippies rejoined the Yippies.
