    Fort Laramie Treaty
Fort Laramie TreatyThe Fort Laramie Treaty involved the US government, settlers, miners, and the Cheyenne and Araphano Indians. The treaty said that the Natives recieved money, tools and animals but they had to stay in a certain area of land. The treaty was broken because gold was discovered at Pikes Peak and the whites wanted it. So the natives got their land in 1851 and 7 years later the gold was discovered in 1859. This lead to the Chivington Massacre.

  • Homestead Act

    Homestead Act
The Homestead Act was an act that made the Preemption Act of 1841 more liberal. With the Homestead Act the goverment hoped to entice citizens to move out west and populate the area. In the Act a man could recieve 160 acres of land in the West for 12 dollars as long as it was improved over a 5 year period. The problem with the Homestead Act was 2 fold. One problem was that many couldnt afford to pick up and move out west. Another was that big companies bought up the land and sold it.

    The Cattle Kingdom

The Cattle Kingdom started after the Civil War. There started to be a high demand for meat in the country. So the cattle industry largely grew into states such as Kansas and Nebraska. So this demand for meat also created the cattle drives and cowboys. These cattle drives happened when cattle from Texas had to be brought up to the railroad up north. So for these cattle drives cowboys would be hired to move the herds.

  • Oklahoma Land Rush

    Oklahoma Land Rush
This, similar to the Homestead Act is a way for the government to entice people to move out west with free land. On April 22 people lined up on an actual starting line and waited for the time to start. When the gun was shot off people raced off to claim the best land. This caused to be very chaotic with people getting trampled, shot, and their carriages flipping over. Another problem is that much of the good land was already claimed by "Sooners" who snuck in and claimed the best land early.
