Stephen Austin meets with Mexican President Santa Anna

Stephen was the voice of the people of Texas and spoke for them in Mexico.
He was arrested on charges of treason.

Feb 23, 1836

Battle of the Alamo

Battle was fought at the Alamo Mission in San Antonio.
All of the Texans were killed, but it sparked more of a want to win for the people of Texas.

Apr 21, 1836

Battle of San Jacinto

Decisive battle of the war, it lasted 18 minutes.
About 630 of the Mexican soldiers were killed and 730 captured, 9 Texans died.

May 14, 1836

Treaty of Velasco grants Texas Independence

It was the first steps in getting Texas's independence.
Mexico claimed that Texas was a breakaway providence..

Jul 4, 1845

U.S. annexes Texas

Texas became the 28th state in the United States.
War broke out over border disputes with Mexico.

Mar 1, 1846

General Taylor marches troops across Rio Grande

Taylor’s troops marched to Rio Grande and entered the city of Matamoros.
Mexican military realized that they wouldn't be able to retakle the city and retreated.

May 13, 1846

Slidell's Rejection

John Slidell was sent to negotiate that the Rio Grande would be the southern border of Texas.
Mexico declined and soon after war was declared.

May 13, 1846

U.S. declares war on Mexico

"Mexico has passed the boundary of the United States, has invaded our territory and shed American blood upon American soil."- Polk
Congress approved the declaration of war on May 13

Feb 2, 1848

Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo ends war with Mexico

Peace treaty between Mexico and the United States. It gave the United States the Rio Grande boundary for Texas, and gave the U.S. ownership of California, and a large area comprising New Mexico, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, and parts of Wyoming and Colorado.
