When James Madison took office Americans were mad at Britain for letting Native Amaricans weppons. Americas had many problems concerning Great Britain and Native Americans.Many Americans were concerned that their countries pride and honor was at stake.

In 1810 War Hawks ( people who belived that war with Britain was needed) took office. They demanded war with Britain. Many New Englanders belived that war with Britain would only harm American trade.

In early 1812 the relations with Britain worsened. Britain told the United States that they wouldnt stop seizing our ships. Native Americans in the northwest begain new attacks on frontier settlments.

In June congress declares a war with Britain. The war did not help the British. Britain was not willing to meet demands to avoid war.

When the war begain Americans were not ready. Jeffersons spending cuts had weakend the military.The army had only 16 war ships ready and less than 7000 men.

In 1814 the British started a battle at Horeshoe bend. The British finally defeated Napolean. When the did they could send more troops to fight the United States.

In 1814 Washington D.C. was attacked. When the British marched into the city the presidents wife gathered all of his important papers and flead. While they were gone they watched the white house burn down.
