    George Washington issued a neutral position to prevent the US from being pulled into wars between other countries.
  • XYZ Affair

    President Adams sent two American diplomats to France to work out issues between the two countries. The French tried to bribe the Americans in order for them to meet with the French Officials. This made Americans mad.
  • Convention of 1800

    An agreement that restored peace between the US and France.
  • Louisiana Purchase

    President Jefferson purchased land from France for $15 million. This doubled the size of the US.
  • Embargo Act

    Congress passed the Embargo Act to prevent trade between the US and Great Britain and France, who were at war. This backfired and hurt the American economy.
  • War of 1812

    The War of 1812 was the result of Great Britain taking American sailors off of their ships and making them serve in the British Navy a practice known as impressment.
  • Treaty of Ghent

    The Treaty of Ghent ended the War of 1812. The US and Great Britain retained the territories they had before the war. The US showed it could hold it's own and earned the respect of other nations.
  • Monroe Doctrine

    The Monroe Doctrine was issued by President Monroe and told European nations that the US was closed to further colonization.
