Congress of Vienna
Representatives of France, Austria, Russia, Prussia and Britain met at Vienna. They divided up Napoloen's empire and created the Kingdow of Netherlands. They gave land to Austria and Prussia and established a balance of power. -
Napoleon's Empire Falls
Belgium forces under the Duke of Wellington and a Prussian army under General Blucher crushed Napoleon's army. He was then forced to abdicate and go into exile. -
Otto Rises to Power
King William I made him a priminister. Within a decade he later became the chancellor. He was put into power to by the king so the legislators would aprove the king's budget. -
Prussia and Austria take Holstein and Schlesvig
Allied iwth Austria, Prussia took the 2 provinces from Denmark. Austria was to administer Holstein while Prussia admnistered Schlesvig. -
Prussia Declares War on Austria
Bismark made an excuse to declare war on Austria. The war lasted 7 weeks that led to a Prussian victory. They took control of sevral other North German States. -
France Declares War on Prussia
Bismark creates a story that angers Napoleon III. He declares war on Prussia. Within a few weeks however, the French surrendered and were forced to accept peace. -
William I takes the title of Kaiser
Southern German States and the North German Confederation persuaded William to take the title of Kaiser. A two house legislature was then set up. The upper house was called the Bundesrat and the lowerhouse was called the Reichstag. However, power still lay in the hands of the Kaiser and his Chancellor. -
Kulturkampf
Bismark wanted to have the Catholics of Germany to pledge to the state before the church. He wrote laws on approving priests, epelling the Jesutis from Prussia, and that couples are to be married by civil authourity rather than the church. But the movement failed due to all the Catholics in the Reichstag. Bismark then reilized his mistake and worked to make peace with the church. -
Bismarck against Socialism/ insurance
Bismarck is agaist socialism because he wants Germany to be unified and to prevent revolutions. Bismarck persuaded people from socialism by giving the people health, accident, and old-age insurance. These actions led the way for future social reform. -
William II becomes Kaiser
William II succeeds his grandfather as the Kaiser. He was as proud leader and wanted to rule alone. Because of his attitude, the demanded that Otto von Bismarck resign as chancellor
